To much oil in the transmission ( auto)will cause frothing of the oil and overheating problems, along with slipping and changes problems
If you filled it through a dip stick tube then find a shop that has an oil syringe ( probably an auto transmission shop) and place a tube down the dip stick tube and suck out the excess oil
failing that you can remove a transmission cooler line from the side of the transmission and let it drain out
This could be most anything without more information. I would suggest having the codes ran by a qualified BMW repair shop. It could be a simple as a vacuum leak or torn intake boot, a bad sensor, or bad coil. Or it could be a clogged catalytic converter, slipping transmission, ECU issue, or a burnt valve. You did not say if there were any check engine lights on or even if it was a 318 or a 325.
Information is key when working on a BMW or any other later model car. Get it scanned.
I would take it to a transmission shop. Slipping could be due to many things, and will only get worse with time. If it happens in certain gears and you have the ability to switch between a few, then you could try to keep it away from those gears. Most automatic transmissions have some basic gear selections. I would take it in, asap.
If you have both a warning light and the transmission is slipping, I would recommend having it towed to a shop. The transmission in your car is prone to leaking transmission fluid from the mechantronics sleeve, and or the transmission pan. You may or may not notice if you have a fluid leak. Covers under the car catch a lot of oil leaks. If transmission repairs are performed, I would recommend resetting the adaptation values as well.
to check oil start vehicle in park and let idle, open large allen bolt [normally 17mm] on g/box sump, oil should spill from aperture. if not top up until it does. this must be done at a temperature of less than 30 degrees celsius as oil expands at higher temperatures.
on the drivers side of the transmission under the car is a plug similar to a rear end in the older rear wheel drive cars bmw has
a lifetime tranny fluid setup so take out the plug and fluid should drip out its right behind the shifter cable if it dosent drip out youll need a pump to put it in you can get these at advance auto
go buy a bottle of Lucas transmission treatment, add it to the trans fluid, if this does not help with in a few hours of driving, your secondary is going bad.
