What size tires come standard with the 1999 ford explorer

Tire pressure is located on drivers door or door jamb on a placard indicating size and pressure recommedations. The pressure is also stamped into the side of the tire in small print indicating maximum pressure ratings. It should be no more than 35psi

Could be damage from jacking vehicle to change tires. Sometimes lift kits are installed to match oversize tires and clearance might be messed up by putting on smaller tires. Any chance dipstick was already leaking?

Its a truck ,Don,t expect good gas milage from it, None of the older ones are great on gas milege

You can find a list of the recommended tires and pressures on a placard affixed to the driver door / jamb. This placard will also list the weight of the vehicle, and other information too. You should be able to look at the sidewall of the existing tires to determine the size. They will likely be either 185/65-14 or 185/60-15.

I looked at Tirerack.com and input your 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 and got these results. Apparently, two different sizes were standard for this car. They are: 185/65-14 and 185/60-15. The main difference is that one is mounted on a 14 inch rim and the other is mounted on a 15 inch rim (as indicated by the bold number in the size). Determine which size rim (by looking at the tire size you currently have) and replace with one of those listed above. This ONLY applies to factory rims. if they have been changed, all bets are off.

Any reputable tire shop or Automotive tire department (at Sears, etc.) should be able to get this info for you free of charge.

if you open up your drivers door there will be a sticker inside there that tells you proper tire sizes and proper inflation for front and rear tires

I believe it will fit. If you go to DiscountTires.com you can use their site for alternate tire sizes. Especially handy is the feature which shows you the Speedometer error for different size tires. The site will also show you recommended and popular substitute tire and wheel sizes.

The 1999 model had a 265/65/17 as an alternative. You may want to ask the Tire store you intend to use if they can reconfigure your Speedo to be accurate. Some of the Fords can be done electrically without changing Speedo gears.

I did something similar by going from a "60" series to a "65" series in the same width. On my Grand Marquis, I gained 5% mileage improvement, but have to watch Speedo until I get it reconfigured. I hope this helps to answer your questions.

It is true that driving with different size tires can damage the transfer case, depending on how long it was driven like that. But--- even if the tires are the same size it can cause this. if the tires are worn and two tires are new the circumference of the tires must not be more than 1/2 inch difference from each other, take a tape measure and put it around the tire in the center and measure the difference of each tire
