2006 Kia Spectra 5. 4 wheel disc brakes, on the rear brakes, how to I retract the piston in the caliper so I can replace my disc pads and reinstall the caliper. The piston does not compress like the front brakes. The rear brake piston/caliper is a whole different animal. Thanks, Gary

you need a tool to turn the piston to get it to go back into the caliper. if you don`t have the proper tool you can use a pair of adjustable pliers to turn the piston back but be careful to not damage the piston rubber boot.
1. Block the back tires or set parking brake 2. Jack the vehicle up and set stands or use ramps. 3. Take the front wheels off 4. There are two bolts on back of each caliper Take them off. 5. The whole caliper comes off now DONT LET HANG FROM THE HOSE!!! 6. Get a c clamp or BIG pliers to compress the pistons in the caliper back into place. 7. Remove the pads, inspect the rotors for wear and deep gouges. IF bad, replace. 8. Put in the new pads and replace the calipers. Make sure bolts are tight, Torque wrench recommended. Put the tires back on, start the car and pump the brakes to get the pistons in the right spot.
be aware of the master cy;linder and not to overflow it by pushing fluid. this is wher moms turkey baster comes in handy. One more thing some rear brakes pistons need to be spun, turned in, twisted i believe clockwise. good luck!
Remove the brake master cylinder filler cap and remove fluid until the reservoir is half full.
Raise and safely support the vehicle.
Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
CAUTION Never allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose.
Remove the two disc brake caliper pin bolts.
Lift the disc brake caliper from the anchor plate and position the caliper out of the way. Do not disconnect the fluid line.
Inspect the disc brake caliper for leaks and replace the caliper if necessary.
Remove the pads and retraction clips.
To Install: CAUTION Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the pad lining material.
Install retraction clips.
Install the brake pads.
Slowly compress the caliper pistons with a large C-clamp.
CAUTION Use care not to damage the bleeder screw or front disc brake rotor shield.
Install the disc brake caliper.
Install the disc brake caliper pin bolts. Tighten the pin bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) (F-250, F-350 SRW). Tighten the pin bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm) (F-350 DRW). Tighten the pin bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm) (F-450 F-550).
Install the wheel and tire assembly.
Lower the vehicle.
Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid.
you need a special tool avalable at most parts stores. its a disc brake piston turning tool. you have to rotate piston clockwise while pushing in on piston. you can fabricate something that enguages the slots and push and turn till all the way in.make sure to note position of slots and put them in same place as was before or the pin on the pads wont enguage the slot
YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE REAR WHEELS.REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE CLIP FROM CALIPER DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE.HOLD THE GUIDE PIN WITH A BACK UP WRENCH AND REMOVE UPPER MOUNTING BOLT FROM THE BRAKE CALIPER.SWING THE CALIPER DOWNWARD AND REMOVE THE BRAKE PADS.TO INSTALL NEW PADS.YOU HAVE TO RETRACT PISTON INTO THE HOUSING BY ROTATING THE PISTON CLOCKWISE.PUT EVERYTHING BACK VISA VERSA.
If you are replacing the rear pads and are trying to retract the caliper pistons here is what you need to do. Use a piston installation tool in order to twist the brake caliper piston into the brake caliper bore. If you do not have the tool you can retract the piston by using a needle nose plier. Exert downward force and rotate clockwise until the piston bottoms out. Before installing be sure the two "U" shaped slots are at 6:00 and 12:00 Oclock.
Don't do this if your not comfortable working on cars ... someone could get hurt ...or your car could. Make sure front wheel are blocked and car is in either park or first gear.
Don't set the parking break.
Lift corner up to remove tire.
Remove the two shoulder bolts on back of caliper .. .10mm I think.
Pull caliper up and forward. Don't let it hank by the brake line.
Remove pad, making sure to not lose the small clip that holds onto the ears of the pads.
You need to get a special tool to screw in the piston that is on the caliper. This can be obtained for about $15 at most automotive store.
Be careful to not tear the rubber piston boot when screwing piston back in ... go slow.
Wipe caliper off of any dirt. Don't use compressed air. Use a small wire brush to remove any corrosion in the area where the pad ears go, if needed.
Replace new pads into caliper and remount caliper onto rotor.
Screw shoulder bolts back in. Don't force them as the shoulder fits into a hole in the backing plate. You should almost be able to screw them in by hand. tighten good
Get in car and work parking brake about 5 times. This adjusts the pads to the rotors.
With rear brakes the caliper piston must screwed in. It usually has a parking brake mechanism that has to screw out as the pad wears down. When you install a new fat pad, the piston won't retract with normal pressure of a clamp but must be screwed back in on the parking brake screw. This can be done with a long nose pliers but tools are made just for the purpose. I hope this helps.
