The car will not start unless it is in Park or Neutral (you already knew that) there is a cable from the shifter to the switch that starts the car that controls that function. I think it has slipped out of adjustment.
Sounds like a cable to the transmission is not adjusted up right, and/or the neutral safety switch is not adjusted right, if this applies to your Toyota Corolla.
check the neutral safty switch, if this is bad it will not start in park. put it ineutral and see if it starts. if so switch is bad. also the vehicles made lately have a switch in back of brake pedal witch means brake has to be pressed to start car. check safety switch first.

This Too Is A Starter Problem, If >>The Battery Terminals Are Clean <<And >>The Starter Terminals Are Clean and TIGHT <<,I Would Wait Till It Wont Start Again and SMACK THE STARTER 2-3 times with a HAMMER then Try Starting it. If It Starts then it is The Starter. I KNOW this seems A Little UNCONVENTIONAL BUT For 30 Years This Technique Has Diagnosed HUNDREDS of STARTER Problems for me.
normally when its the starter it might start a few time eventually it dies it seem more li a neutral switch problem neutral
