SOURCE: '86 F-150 5.0 EFI

it can be either bad gas smell the gas if it smell like tekila or alochol, that means the fuel is contaminated with e-85
or if fuel smells ok, check also your last receipt for last fuel purchase and make sure you have not buy any e-85, also check for maf or map sensor and unplug it, if any changes the sensor is bad, also if you have dual fuel thank check the filter in the fuel separator, it is a big plastic hosing where all the fuel lines atached together.

SOURCE: When accelerating my 1988 2.3 Ford Ranger will intermittently mis

got me thinking this one??done a compression test ???valve seats i think as cars before 92 didnt require a cat,if engine was designed without stelite coatings on the seats as it ran on leaded fuel.but with the introduction of unleaded fuels some cars sort of got missed in the changeover.but this is a ford and i know that when i worked in the factory in 1972 evan then all engines produced had stelite coatings but that was europeon built engines.Well enough history do a compression test, and if need be grind the valves in and fit new springs and seals it cant hurt

SOURCE: I have an '88 ford f-150 302. I changed spark

I have seen this before working for Ford...it really came down to removing the exhaust pipe infront of the clogged catalytic convertor and road testing it to confirm that the convertor was clogged.. So if you can loosen the pipe in fron of the convertor so that the exhaust can escape with out going through a possibly clogged or melted convertor and if it runs with power thats great other wise diagnostics for the engine will be needed to be done.

I put new plugs points rotor distributor cap condenser on my Ford 8N started right up then died but the distributor rotated 180 degrees in the process any ideas about what happened

Are you sure that the rotor was not on tight enough and spun around? Watch the dist with the cap off to see if it is rotating. The dist gear could have slipped on the shaft or the timing gear gone bad. Take the engine to top dead center and reset the dist to see if it will run.

1986 350 engine changed timing chain won't start on #1 but starts and runs great if i set roder facing #6 dist cap is there two firing orders for this engine ?

THERE IS ONLY ONE FIRING ORDER FOR THIS IT HAS BEEN THE SAME SINCE 1960??? 18436572 WITH NO1 IF YOU ARE STANDING STRAIGHT IN FRONT OF THE ENGINE YOUR HEI DIST SHOULD HAVE 2 PRONGS STRAIGHT ACCROSS FACING YOU IF IT IS NOT YOU MUST PULL THE DIST, ROTATE THE ENGINE AROUND TO COMPRESSION STROKE, VERIFY THIS BY THE POINTER ON THE TIMING COVER SET IT TO 0 WITH THE PISTON IN NO1 CYLINDER UP IF NO 1 PISTON IS NOT UP FULLY EXTENDED IN THE SPARK PLUG HOLE YOU ARE NOT AT NO 1
IF THE PISTON IS FULLY EXTENDED AND YOU HEARD A AIR SOUND THEN YOU ARE RIGHT, PLACE THE DIST BACK IN TURN THE ROTOR 1 TO 2 NOTCHES BACK TO THE RIGHT AND HAVE SOME ONE CRANK THE ENGINE IN SPURTS, IT SHOULD DROP IN, THEN REPEAT THE PROCESS TO VERIFY YOU ARE ACTUALLY ON NO1 THEN BEGIN THE WIRING

I took my distributor out to replace the heads forgot to mark it. I reinstalled engine was hard to start but would start but rough I took dist. out thinking I was 180 out reinstalled turned over great but...

What you need to do is take the distributor out and by hand turn the engine so that Cylinder #1 is at TDC on the Ignition cycle. YOu can determine this by watching the valve rockers. Once the Exhaust valve has opened and closed, the intake valve should open and close. At that point watch the crank balancer for the "timing" marks to line up. Then install the distributor with the cap OFF, watching the rotor. It will rotate as you lower the distributor so you will have to rotate the dist shaft the right amount before you try to put it in so the rotor will point to #1 on the cap when it is all the way in.

One of my employes took the distributer out of my 94 jeep cherokee 2wd automatic 4.0 inline 6-cylinder when replacing some parts in the distributer now we cant figure out the timing or what to set it at....

If you got the dist back in and the engine won't run, you are only one or two teeth off. To get it right, take out a couple of plugs, or get a big socket on the crank bolt and turn the engine over by hand, when the timing mark comes around, set it on it's mark. this should be TDC for No. 1 cylinder, which is the front most piston of any V shaped engine, or the front of any inline, now with the dist in the hole, and the cap on, follow the wire to the front cylinder, that is no. 1, set the pointer on the dist to no. 1. push it down, make sure it stays there, you should be all set. Hope this helps.

I removed my distributor from my ford inline 6 cylinder engine but I forgot to mark the location. How do I put it back in the right position, and how do I find TDC?

this is the way i do all my cars and trucks
take off the coil wire and the dist cap, take out #1 plug
have someone help you, place your finger over #1 plug hole but not in the cylinder but over it,
have your helper tunk the key and turn over the motor just a tunk as in maybe 1/8 of a turn keep tunking it until the compression pushes out your finger your at #1 so look at the rotor button of where it is pointing and mark it on the dist then put the cap back on and place #1 plug wire on the post where you marked it

Set timming

You will need a timing light for Hi energy ignition as well as standard socket set or wrenches. 1. get the engine up to operating temp. 2 shut off engine connect the timing light to the number one[1] spark plug wire at the spark plug end connect battery connectors. 3 start engine and note location of pointer on the mark tab on the timing cover. 4 shut off engine loosen the hold down clamp on the distributor turn the bolt no more than one full turn[snug is better than loose here] then note the position of the dist. cap. Move the dist. to make sure it moves freely replace back to the starting position and remove and plug the vaccum line to the dist. 5 start engine and set timing to the desired spec. 6 shut off engine tighten dist. clamp bolt 7 start engine check timing one more time to see if still there at desired setting. 8 shut off engine dis-connect all tools and light
