remove coil wire at distributor and plug a HEI GM tester spark plug to see if spark at ignition coil if not test ignition coil for current and signal not short to ground
the first thing I would do I would check my alternator belt if it runs w pump and alt this could be the problem of overheating and dead battery on the engine part what I do is put a socket at the crankshaft bolt and turn it with a 1/.2 braker bar if it turns the engine is not seiced be sure the engine is off to this tests.
Have to read the codes to determine what set off the lite . Then do the repairs the codes dictate. If the item that turned on the lite is repaired and the battery is fully charged and the starter is good get back to me if you still can't start the vehicle.
if it doesnt even click over straight nothing at all ....
battery is no go at all
1.if it starts off a jump.....
altinater could be bad...take positive battery terminal off battery while car is on ...if it stays running its good if car dies altinaters bad.

Check and make sure your battery connections havent been compromised. I once drove a car not at all similar to yours, but experienced the same problem, random killing, especially when braking, and turning. It turned out that the battery positive cable would slip on the terminal as it wasnt secured tightly. It sounds simple, but it is a possibility.
I am having the same exact issue right now with my 01 Alero. Been having electrical issues with lights coming on and off. ABS was kicking on a few times even. It started sputtering like it was running out of gas, thought that might have been the case. But after I put gas in it it still didn't start. Now it turns over but nothing. What ended up being wrong with yours?
I had this same exact problem about a month ago with my 1990 Accord LX. Sounds like your ignition switch has gone bad. I installed one from a junk yard and have not had any problems since. If you can find the nearest salvage yard and go and pull one yourself. Easy to install. Has a switch at one end attached to a plug-in wiring harness. You can search on YouTube for installation video tips. Hope this helps.
The gas gauge problem is the simplest problem, and actually a pretty common one. The sending unit in the gas tank has a blank spot (for lack of a better word). When the gauge hits that spot, it gets no signal and goes to empty. If it does this for only a certain level of gas, this is the problem. If the level of gas is irrelavent, then it might be related to your other problems.
When the car "cuts out" you say the tach and speedometer quit working. That means you have lost electricity to those parts. I would concentrate on searching for an electrical short. The very first thing I would do is thoroughly clean the battery cables. Electrical problems are the most difficult car problems to diagnose, so, Good Luck.
