I have a 1999 Chevy cavalier that has a hard time cranking, but will always start. The fuel pump is coming on and working any advice would be very helpful. P/S i bought the car used with this problem.

Is the battery fully charged for the cranking operation? If it is and still cranks slowly check to make sure that there is no corrosion on battery contacts. If all checks out fine it is possible that the engine may have overheated before you owned it and some parts expanded and were damaged with result that it is hard to turn the engine over .

What would cause my 1997 chevy cavalier 2.2 to start hard sometimes in the morning and when it starts sometimes it runs rough for a while then its ok

Sounds like a fuel supply issue. A cold engine requires more fuel to start/run effeciently. There are many things that can cause this problem. Possible fuel pump bleeding fuel back into the tank/bad fuel filter/improper reading from temperature sensor/ wiring issue/poor tune up parts just to name a few

97 cavalier starts and runs ok from a cold start after a few minutes of warm up it starts to run rough and miss. If i try to drive it it will start out ok but won't shift automaticly but shifts fine m

Sounds like possibly more than on problem, crankshaft position sensor, or ignition module likely on starting prob which maybe affecting shifting due to hard code in ecm, or shift prob could be shift solenoid in valve body of transmission. Both parts readily available from local parts store

97 cavalier... I have codes 0300 and 0171 reading. Where should I start? Already grabbed anew coil pack to throw on. Should I really be looking elsewhere? Check engine light was on 2 days with no trouble...

A vacuum leak is likely. Spray some carb cleaner on the intake manifold gasket while the engine is idling. If the speed changes, you have a leak where ever you sprayed.

Starting problems

It sounds like a fuel pressure problem. Does it start hard after it is warmed up or only when it is first started cold? Do you have access to a fuel pressure guage?

Hard starting

Coolant temperature sensor sounds like it went bad. It is reading that the engine is warm all the time, so the computer is not commanding additional fuel for startup. Easy and cheap fix.
