Check engine light came on yesterday and won't go off. Never noticed this before. We replaced the plug the headlight goes in yesterday, and have never noticed the check engine light on before. It does **** up oil fairly fast. There is a bad smell of oil burning which we notice right before I turn the car off or stopping at a stop sign or stop light. Stronger when the heater is on. One more issue, it is making a strange sound when I change gears.

SOURCE: i noticed my subaru leeking oil, i checked the oil
Hi, you may have a valve cover gasket leak that is dripping on the exhaust manifold. I would inspect the valve cover area for oil spots and rim leaks. The smoke is coming from the dripping of the oil on the manifold or, lower exhaust pipe.
Please rate and god bless:)
SOURCE: CHECK ENGINE FLASHES WHENEVER I DRIVE THE CAR.
The Check Engine light usually means the car has an emission system problem. Diagnosis requires an OBD2 scanner.
But first, check your gas cap. Is it loose? How good is the O-ring or gasket? A poor seal is the most common Check Engine cause.
Good luck.

Check the cap and rotor for internal carbon tracking or, just change them. Also, take a look at the coil when its dark and rainy and see if there is any arcing where the coil wire goes into it.
