Air breather hose connection configuration

over fully transmission or boiling transmission oil
the transmission breather hose may be connected to the air filter box
check air filter for blocked making the engine suck air from the transmission

possible breather hose for the transmission venting to the air filter area

Check the following items:
1. good clean air filter?
2. no leaks in the air filter box, cover closed properly?
3. connecting hoses attached to the air box properly?
4. pcv valve working correctly?

1. Change the air filter if you don't recall the last time it was done. I record the mileage on filter with a permanent marker. Put it in a location where its visible with the air box opens. Change the air filter every 2 years or 30000 miles which ever occurs first.

2. Ensure that the two parts are aligned properly and that all the clamps and hoses all fit correctly. A good way to find vacuum leaks is to use vaseline on the ends of any poor fitting hoses. Do one at a time and you can isolate the problem hoses.

3.The two vent hoses that attach the valve covers to both sides of the air box can become loose with age. Adding some screw clamps can solve a small leak. Replace the hoses if they are hard and dried out. Also inspect the throttle body connection part of the air box for loose clamps and fitment.

4.Pcv test is pretty simple. Start the engine, open the oil cap, then hold a piece of paper over the cap. If the pcv is working the engine vacuum should try to suck the paper in. If the vacuum is weak then clean or replace the pcv valve.

If the all the above checks are good then its time to replace the front oxygen sensor.

The air filter is not quickly changed. I found it best to disconnect and remove the battery first. Then the housing to the air filter is more easily accessed. The air filter housing is that big ugly black plastic box sitting on an angle behind the battery. Loosen the two hose clamps on the downstream side, un-clip the wired sensor on the housing, and remove the 3 bolts that hold the box to the car body (one high, 2 low) Pop off the air-in port and pull the air-filter box from the car. See how it\'s wire clamped on 3 sides and use pliers to lift them off their stays. Open and remove old filter, wipe or blow out any debris and gunk found in the housing, put in new filter. Carefully re-clamp shut, being sure it\'s seated correctly. Lightly clean and grease the ports that will be re-clamped and put it all back. Yeah, it\'s tedious, but now you know how it all fits together. And you can clean all that acid on your battery, battery posts and tray before putting that back in while you\'re at it, making for a better connection there too.

The previous owner is an idiot. The air filter may be BELOW the box you are refering to. That hose is the crankcase vent and if thats not connected the engine will pull dirt in through that hose. The box has clips to secure the 2 halves of the box. get a new hose. I would not have bought the van if I saw that hose missing.

1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet 1.8L FI SOHC 4cyl

1985-89 Scirocco and Cabriolet

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the fuel tank.
2. Remove the rear right wheel housing cover.
3. Disconnect the large breather hose from the filler neck.
4. Pull the gravity valve down leaving the hoses connected.
5. Unbolt the fuel pump bracket from the body and lower the pump.
6. Remove the fuel tank screw.
7. Disconnect the fuel pump hose and pull the blue hose from the return line.
8. Disconnect the brake hoses from both sides of the rear axle and plug them.
9. Disconnect the rear axle from both sides of the body and allow it to swing down and rest on the handbrake cable guides.
10. Unhook the rear muffler support lugs.
11. Disconnect the filler hose from the tank.
12. Support the tank, remove the tank fasteners and lower the tank enough to disconnect the fuel gauge sending unit wires and breather hoses.
13. Remove the fuel tank.

To install:
If installing a new or used tank, make note of where the old foam strips were installed, and install new foam strips on the replacement tank in the same locations.

1. Raise and support tank. Connect the small breather hoses and fuel gauge sending unit wires. Install the tank fasteners.

When connecting the breather hoses, position the hose clips so that they do not make contact with the body.

1. Connect the filler hose to the tank and connect the rear muffler support lugs.
2. Raise the rear axle off the handbrake cable guides and install.
3. Connect the brake hoses and bleed the brakes.
4. Connect the return line and fuel pump hose.
5. Install the fuel tank screw.
6. Raise the fuel pump and attach the fuel pump bracket to the body.
7. Put the gravity valve back into its original (raised) position.
8. Connect the large breather hose to the filler neck.

When connecting the breather hose, position the hose clip so that it does not make contact with the body.

1. Install the right rear wheel housing cover.
2. Fill the tank and connect the negative battery cable.

The filter is located down low under the air box which connects to the throttle body. You'll need to remove the fresh air inlet line from the throttle body (loosen hose clamp) there are two (2) large phillips head screws which hold the air box in place , remove these there may too be a clamp which connects the air bos to the filter box, if there loosen and slide away the air box. On the filter box there are two (2) clamps that hold the filter in, snap back these claps to access the filter and replace. To install reverse the above.

check for a leak in the air duct between the air filter box and the throttle body. When the mass airflow sensor was replaced you may have failed to get tight connections and any leak in this ductwork will cause problems with driveability. Also check for any thin or soft ruber spots in hoses between PCV valve and the intake. Any holes in these will cause the vehicle to run poorly but normally would be noticed at idle also.

follow the breather plastic hose probably blck in color and it should go back close to the right hand side headlight. There will be asort of box it connects to and you will need to remove 4 screws i believe. Under that is the breather. Thats where I find it on most vehicles so please know I am guessing here and leave me a good mark for trying. Thanks, Raz

If it's the small hose connected between the breather element inside the air cleaner pan and the PCV valve, it's called the breather hose.
