I think my alternator went out but my husband thinks it is the battery...... how can i tell which one it is?

    i tried to start it and it would not even crank over so then i had someone try to jump start me, then it would start but all of the gauges in the car would go crazy and when the jumping cables were taken off the car would die

You need to put a volt meter across the battery it should read between 12.5V TO 14.2V any more or less and it is the alternator . depending on problem the battery could still be damaged let me know

Alternator bad know
Take the car to a local Autozone and have the Alternator tested, it is free. Also when the "Battery" light comes on it doesn't mean there is a problem with the battery persay it means the battery is not getting charged up while you drive.

Sounds like your alternator went out or not making good connection at the battery terminals, preventing the battery from being charged. If the battery does not charge, you will use up the battery energy to maintain the vehicle running UNTIL you deplete the battery. the more accesories you have on, the faster it discharges till the point of killing your ignition on your engine. You definitely have a charging issue, more than likely, your alternator went out.

If the car does not run with a batterie in it than it is the alternator. test by uhooking the batterie while car is running, Remove the negative cable ( BLACK ). if it stops running than you have a bad alternator, Which means you husband and you are both correct.

use a voltmeter to check voltage on battery before and after your start the car, it should be between 14-16 volts while running and 12 when not. if it's not between 14-16 volts while running, your alternator is not charging, replace or rebuild it.

Bad alternator?
You could have gotten a bad alternator, it has happened.
I don't think it could be a bad fusable link, cause if it was you would have had a problem right off with the new one.
Have the battery checked, it might be bad, weak or dead cells. if that is the case, the alternator is over charging and burning out.

Battery goes dead overnight on four occasions
I dont think the dealer knew what he was doing ,your altenator has 6 diodes inside it and the are a one way check valve for current,If one fails no light will come on because it is still charging,But will drain your battery,I hope this helps you and have a merry x mas and please dont forget to vote on this solution

1997 nissan sentra serpentine belt
The serpentine belt has nothing to do with the brakes. It does have something to do with the alternator which charges the battery. the burning smell is probably the result of wasted grooves on the underside of the belt. it is the belt you see just inside the car engine compartment that turns the AC unit compressor pully , the alternator, etc.it is connected to the crankshaft pully.. If you have a front wheel drive it is located on the side of the engine compartment.
