SOURCE: Check engine light and MAF sensor on 99 Jeep?

Hi Jessica:
Well, according with the previous diagnostic, I guess that you have P0171 Trouble Codestored in the PCM.

Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

Note: This DTC is very similar to P0174 and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.

You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration.

A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
  • There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.

Possible solutions include:
  • In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
  • Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
  • Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure
Try this first and before to buy some replacement part.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

2000 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 rough idle,

This what I think is happening. Your engine is running rich because the ECM thinks it has too much air and so injects more fuel. When you now introduce air, by taking th e vacuum line off, the fuel mixture is now more balanced. Have you cleaned your MAF sensor? Also make sure your engine coolant is full.

98 jeep cherokee sport flashing engine light

The check engine light is because all check engine light codes are caused by components that affect emissions. It's not actually an engine problem, it's a problem with either your O2 sensor, MAF sensor, fuel/air ratio, pyrometer, or exhaust.

Check to make sure your intake system does not have any leaks in it that is allowing extra air to come in past the MAF sensor.

Jeep grand cherokee ''1999'' engine revs up intermiten, engine code P0320, crank sensor or cam sensor? or something else?

Just trying to help. Jeep dealer won't tell you what code means? My guess would be in the intake system. MAF sensor? Air intake leak? I don't think its the pos. sensors because your engine would not run (been there done that). Your throttle is cable driven?

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is overheating due to the fan not turing on. I have checked all of the wires (none pinched or broken), jumped the cooling fan, replaced the relay, checked the fuse...

have you checked the current with a test light? what about the temperature sensor? the fan will only come on when the temperature gets to a certain point.. try checking the temperature sensor, maybe plug came off, but you should get check engine light if that was the case. fan motor might have gone bad.
