Just to add to this , iv got an 89 jeep cherokee and i changed mine out with out haveing to drop the steering col.
Remove lower instrument panel trim. remove 2 steering column to dash/brake support nuts and lower steering column. remove screws holding ignition switch to column and lift switch off of lock rod. first remove black harness connector, then remove white connector from switch.

steering columns may have a retaining screw holding the lock cylinder
in the column. When servicing this type, simply remove the retaining
screw and remove the lock cylinder.
