If the DTC is P0401 it means that the EGR Valve is clogged or air flow is insufficient.Take EGR valve off and clean carbon out or replace EGR valve with a new one.
I work at autozone and as the man said the evap system maybe the fault that can up on the obd 2 code reader but if no ither codes came up then you
can have a problem that is not code related ( as early car 96 to 2000 the service light only covers things that are in the pollution part of the engine..
the newer cars the service engine / malfunction light will come on for many other things
if your egr is not seating on idle then you would stall at a stop if you egr stays closed then your car would be polluting and could not pass e-check
if the car is not running properly and it has a multiport fuel injected system /coilpack system
change the cranksensor ..If you have a distributor
change the pickup coil/ ignition control module
these are both in the distributor...
as long as you have good wires & plugs you should be in good shape
it has a digatal egr valve remove the egr valve and lean it with top engine cleaner from GM, with a tooth brush, then test the stepper motor with an ohm meter if it mesures more than 6 ohms replace it.
Make sure you do not have any vacuum leaks and the egr is functioning properly. Next do a compression check and see if you have a low or dead cylinder. I hope this helps you to find your solution. Merry Christmas! and God Bless!
You might have your computer checked to make sure the circuit that controls egr valve is working. On my vehicle, I had several egr valves changed and failed the emissions test until I had the computer changed and the PROMS updated with the latest PROM.
The EGR valve is easy to change because it is on top of the engine. It has electrical coils that control the valve and one of the valves may be damaged where it can not compensate at idle. If the EGR is working, when the engine first starts the engine should increase in idle speed and then switch to a lower idle speed. This is part of the EGR system check and it adjusts as the engine increases in temperature.
There are several other reasons if one of the Emission sensors is faulty that may cause the rough idle. The oxygen sensor, tempearture sensor, MAP sensor,...etc. You may have a trusted mechanic attempt to read any codes on the engine.
my light went out after i replaced egr valve---twice--then came back on....then i had a fuel system "clean out" done by national chain...light went out--milage went up--GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
P0301 code means that the the car's computer has detected that one of the engine's cylinders is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #1
P0171 code basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1. - this could be an open vacuum line.
on your P0301 and your P0171, the first thing I would check is your mass airflow sensor, it's probably fouled, also check the air filter, and vacuum lines for cracks.
P1406 code - EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit - this basically states that the EGR valve is clogged.
