You have to remove the ignition key cylinder. Remove the top and bottom steering column covers. Once that is removed you should be able to see the outside molding of the key cylinder. There is a special tool that you have to buy to remove the cylinder.
If the key is broken off inside the cylinder and u still have the other half of the key u should be able to insert the remainder of the key to get the ignition to turn forward. You'll have to remove the covers surrounding the upper half of the steering column and you will see a small pin on the cylinder to push to remove the inner part with the broken key. the key has to be in the on position to remove the cylinder and just reverse the removal to put it back together.

Things You'll Need:
Adjustable wrench
Philips screwdriver
Paper clip
Ignition switch Follow this simple steps
Open the hood and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal on the battery by loosening it with an adjustable wrench in a counterclockwise direction. Lift the cable off of the terminal and push it aside.
Remove the plastic trim covers on the steering column from inside the passenger compartment by turning out the holding screws on the underside of the column with a Philips screwdriver in a counterclockwise direction. Set the trim covers and screws aside.
Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the ON position.
Straighten out a paper clip and insert one end of it into the hole on the side of the ignition cylinder facing the driver. Pull the ignition cylinder out towards the left hand side of the car once the paper clip releases the pin that holds the cylinder in place.
Remove the key from the old cylinder and place it into the new ignition switch. Push the switch assembly into the cavity that the old switch was removed from until it locks into place. Turn the key to the OFF position and remove it if desired.
Replace the plastic trim covers and tighten the holding screws in a clockwise direction with a Philips screwdriver.
Place the battery cable back onto the negative battery terminal and tighten it with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction. Close the hood.
Disable the airbag system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.

Remove the steering column trim covers.
With the key installed, turn the key to the RUN position.

To install:
Verify the alignment of the gear in the ignition switch. If gear is not in position shown, turn gear in ignition switch until you reach the correct position.
Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear counterclockwise until it hits a stop. In order to reach a stop while rotating the lock cylinder housing gear you MUST push and hold in the solenoid on the electric park lock.
Connect the connector to the ignition switch.
Insert the ignition switch into the lock cylinder housing. The tabs on the ignition switch MUST be seated inside the lock cylinder housing for proper installation.
Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear clockwise to the start position—allowing it to spring return into the RUN position.

The top and bottom plastic steering column covers need to be removed
with a Torx screwdriver. The tilt lever, if it exists, must be
unscrewed to remove them.
Then, remove the tamper-proof Torx screws to remove the entire plastic
ignition switch assembly, including key cylinder. The metal cylinder
part can now be removed from the ignition switch. If you need to remove
the internal keyed part from the cylinder, the key must be in a
specific position, and a hammer must be used at a specific spot. Most
locksmiths have access to this specific procedure, and/or will do it
for $10 or so.
Otherwise you can simply replace the cylinder, but that means the key
will be different than the doors.
Air bag , steering wheel, and signal switch have to be removed before the ignition cylinder can be removed. I would try very hard to remove the broken key without damaging anything.. Hope this helps.
hi markjones, the ignition switch can usually be removed without too much disassembly. First you will need to remove a plastic screw in the upper and lower trim covers. Seperate the covers. You should see a black plastic ring around the mechanical switch. gentley remove the ring. Next remove the rubber o-ring/band. With the key in the iginition and turned to almost to position 1, insert a heavy duty paper clip, or bmw special tool (about $30 from the dealer) into the small hole in the switch. There is a cam in the hole that needs to be twisted clockwise so the cylinder can be removed. When installing a new switch make sure to remove the little tab pice of metal that usually breaks off in the housing. Also be sure to make sure and reinstall the rubber ring/band because they are part of the ews system. If you key turns continuously, or is not able to be removed, the ignition housing and cylinder both will need replaced. Replacing the lock housing is about a 2 hour sequence and can be challenging. I would recommend a shop for that kind of repair.
