My 2002 Chevy Tracker LT (V6 2.5L) emits a loud squeal when the A/C is turned on. The squeal fades or sometimes goes away, then comes back intermittantly when the A/C is on. A/C still cools. Belts are good and not squealing. I think it's the compressor clutch. Should I replace the whole compressor or just the clutch?

Most new cars come with ceramic disc brake pads to reduce noise. Aftermarket brake pads, depending upon materials in them, can be prone to squealing. Some pads come with adhesive shims that are designed to absorb vibration and reduce or stop squeal. There is also a compound you can but to put on the back of the pads to do the same thing when you install. Sometimes the noise will go away once the pads have had a chance to settle in .Some are just ornery and won't shut up.
if you can make is squeal parked its easy to find,
can you, or do so at and ASE certified shop,

Check the front universal joint. These don't have grease fittings and tend to fail Put vehicle in park and check drive shaft for excessive movement by rotating it by hand. If you feel any play at all it may have failed. Hope this helps.
Replace the serpentine tine belt, I found that some belts will squeal with high mile cars due to the pulleys it self being worn out. Most Auto parts store carry different brands of belt, try replacing the belt there and if it starts to squeal, try another brand. They'll take it back for an exchange, been there done that. If you have a spray bottle, spray the belt and see if the noise goes away, if it does and comes back when the water drys. replace the belt. Good luck and hope this will help.
