Although a KIA manual will state that this is an interference engine, it is not. I know because I have replaced a shredded timing belt on my used 2000 Sportage to take it home and it ran great. Just recently, the timing idler pulley bolt broke while I was driving causing the belt to come off. I replaced the tensioner pulley and drilled out and re-tapped the idler bolt hole and installed the new idler and the belt (it was only 2 months old at the time) and it runs great again. THESE ARE NOT INTERFERENCE ENGINES!!!! you don't have to tear down the top end of the engine to inspect for any damage and it is very simple to install a timing belt on this motor as long as it is done properly.
I am on my third belt and when it breaks it does NOT hurt the valves. Just be sure when replacing to accurately line up the cam gears as they have dots on them that have to align. In their resting position they are NOT lined up ( off about 1/4" inch) because the valve springs are now free without a timing belt to force them out of place. Put belt on while having a socket and handle twisting one of the cam gears into position (slight tweak but necessary). Then the belt will keep the gear in its new position. Mid- install be sure and rotate engine before covering belt and see if alignment of gears stays after 2 revolutions. If not align must tweak till aligned. Not difficult.

This is an interference engine. Pull the rocker cover first to inspect. If you have any displaced followers or extremely loose rockers, You have bent valves. This is extremely common when you break a belt on this engine.
