Check to make sure that your air box cover is either not broken (to much air to the engine) or loose

First off have the ODBII engine codes read out. It will probably tell you that one or more of the following has a code:
1. O2 sensor Bank 1
2. Mass air flow sensor problem
3. Throttle position sensor problem.
4. EGR Valve problem

The OBDII codes will tell you which one it is.
My bet is either 2 or 3 above but would have to read codes first.

Thanks for using FixYa.

2006 Jeep Liberty - While pulling boat the check engine light comes on and it begins to sputter and stall. After I remove the boat and drive it, the light goes off and no more sputter and stalling?

The check engine light will come on when the management computer detects a fault that can affect exhaust emissions. When that happens the computer switches to a get you home programme and records a fault code.

A code read is required to discover the fault which should then be verified by independent tests before wasting money chasing down blind alleys.

Rough start occassionally

first i'd try changing the air filter, if that doesn't work, try the fuel filter

Check MAP sensor. If PCM gets wrong data from MAP sensor it should offset ignition timing and/or make fuel mixture too lean or too rich.
