My 1995 golf gl (2l) automatic won't start when I turn the key. The dash lights and all the electrical goes on but when I turn the key in the ignition, nothing happens. I ended up just pulling and tugging on every wire in the engne bay until 30 min later, I turn the ignition and it sputters then it starts running! I really don`t know what to do, it`s broken down on me a bunch of times and I would rather avoid expensive mechanic rates.

Check and clean, if necessary, your battery terminals - and then make sure they're tight and secure. I had this happen once with an old Subaru: everything electrical worked (although the lights were very dim, wipers were sluggish, etc.), but the problem turned out to be loose and dirty battery terminals. Started right up after that. . .

SOURCE: V6 4Motion Flat battery and dash light problems

Hi Dean,
With regard to the alternator, you could check that the battery terminals and earthing straps are all tight and free of corrosion, which might mean removing them to see.

As for the other problems there are 1002 things that could be wrong and the first step is to get the fault codes read, either by a properly equipped VW mechanic or you can do it yourself with a £15 interface cable, a laptop computer, free VAG diagnostic software. Plus a willingness to learn!

One thought about the red text on the dash - check your manual to se what that means - it might mean "don't drive me because it will cause serious damage".

Hope this helps a bit. If so, a rating would be appreciated. If it doesn't help please "add a comment" instead and tell me more.

Thanks, D.

SOURCE: 1995 immobiliser problem

Hi

After some closer inspection, I found that somebody tampered with the startermotor's wires. They cut the 12V wire and stripped the other. So when you disable the immobiliser, and turn the ignition, the 12V that should be applied thorugh that wire is not present. Simple to fix, but flipping anoying!!!

Thanks

Rudolf

The car will turn over but won`t start but if I turn the key on and jump the starter it starts

Sounds like the ignition switch has gone kaput. The ignition switch come in two pieces, an electrical switch and a mechanical switch.

The switch electrical portion can be replaced separatly from the mechanical portion (tumbler that the key engages). It is not a real difficult repair but requires some mechanical knowlege of how the column is assembled.

This can be verified with electrical test equipment prior to buying a new electrical switch.

98 VW Volkswagen GL, Dash lights out, not a bad fuse, dimmer, or light switch. Lights come back on periodically, but when I hit a bump, or if knock on the dash with my fist, they turn back off..What's...

The last time I fixed a problem like this it was a bad connection on the back of the instrument cluster. I found it by working in my garage in the dark. I removed the cluster and wiggled wires with the lights turned on, until I found the trouble spot. I then took a pencil eraser to connections in the area, then cleaned it with alcohol. Put it back together and all was well again. best of luck!

98 VW Golf GL (Manual) Dash lights out!

As with everything else electrical check your fuses first. If you don't have a map of your fuse box just pull them out one at a time and check them.. blown ones will be easy to spot. If all the fuses are good, check the dimmer knob for your interior lights (roll it back and forth a few times) If the lights come on at one certain spot but go out again, it's the dimmer gone bad. If they don't come on at all pull the switch out and check for power with a test light. If power bad dimmer... if still no power bad headlight switch.... Hope this helps...;-)
