I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey and I was driving on the highway when the RPM reved up so high. I check that it was on drive and it was, when I stoped and pulled over the engine light turned on and when i opened the hood, smoke was coming out and it had leaked the transmission oil, which was checked before a 2.5 hour trip and all the fluids were where they should be. There was no prior warning. I have the orginal transmission recalled and replaced at about 100,000 mi the new one only has about 42,000 mi. What is going on? I feel betrayed by HONDA!

My 2004 Odyssey at 1000 to 1500 rpm will growl and the tach will fluctuate quickly. If we raise the rpm at higher speeds it does not happen. Local dealer cannot resolve the issue...its driving us...

Try replacing TPS (Throttle Positioning Switch) These are basically a rheostat and after time they develop a wear/hot spot - usually right around highway cruising position. When they develop a hot spot you get hesitations and RPM fluctuations

Sounds like your transmission is on the way out. Google "transmission problem 2004 Odyssey" and you will know the deal on your transmission. Lots of early 2000 model honda V6 transmissions had lots of problems.

Rpm starts reving high & then transmition on highway slips only allowing the automatic transmition to drive at 30 mps

the bad new is that the transmission has failed....the high revving is due to the clutches slipping (yes, auto transmission have clutches, about 3-4 of them wet), as the material wears on them they start to slip.

i bet if you checked the transmission oil, it would smell burnt and be dark brown, it should be red and sweet smelling.....no cheap way around this unfortunatley.....sorry

In the manual it says I only need to change my oil every 7,000 miles. Is this correct?

If strictly highway driving, yes. If driving dusty rural roads then you need to change more often (filter too)--like 3000 miles.
