1987 Dodge Ram 2.6 Overheating -- tried replacing thermostat, radiator and radiator cap. There is a bolt next to thermostat -- what is that for?

One note- many thermostat elements can be installed backwards and while they will function, they don't allow full flow of the coolant like that.
Dunno what the bolt might be for-
Another possibility is a blown head gasket; if these fail between any combustion chamber and a coolant path, it will heat the devil out of coolant and generally cause exhaust fumes in bubbles in the cooling system. You can check for signs of rust on your plugs since the cooling engine will **** in coolant and that will leave deposits. Also check your coolant for any signs of a milkiness and your oil for signs it is turning into hand-lotion.

Why is my dodge ram overheating?
Sensor would just cause a check engine light and radiator caps hardly ever go bad. It's possible you put the thermostat in upside down. Also possible that a hose is clogged. More than likely you have a massive air bubble trapped in the engine block.

Radiator cap loose after overheating
cap is right next to thermostat right? Replace cap. If the spring is worn and it cant hold 16 psi or whatever itll overheat everytime.

Never use a used radiator... check electric cooling fan, and air must be purged out of the radiator / cooling system after refilling it, this can be a little difficult. are you sure that it is not leaking coolant from somewhere else, which would cause the overheating.?

I hope I am not corect but the dodge engine Mitsubishi has aluminum heads easy to warp and overheat I had three dodge engines with warped heads go for anywhere form 600 head refurbished to 800 remanufactured heads replaced not dealer shop price that would be 1200 to 1600 minimum find a home mechanic have him check the head for warpage do you smell steam sometimes ?? It is a symptom I replaced water pump ,thermostat ,radiator cap, resorvoir , prayed ..prayed but it was the head warp deal ... you can do this yourself BUT replace head bolts and gasket A must when you re install the head

poss. clogeed heater core ,, have you or anybody ever put in radiator sealer ?? , will kill a heater core just like that ,,,,,,,,, when you rev. flushed was it @ the heatercore????

Dodge over heats
When you replaced the thermostat, did you bleed the air out of the coolant lines? When I replaced my thermostat on my old car forgot to bleed the lines out so it kept overheating until I did, then it worked fine. The air in the lines messes up the thermostat somehow and can cause it not to work like it should.
