The JUDDER with the 5spd auto is caused by the torque converter lock up clutch. Some suffer from water damage , but the root cause of this judder is within the valve body assembly.
a fix for this can be purchased from sussexautoparts.co,uk

Most likely nothing mechanically wrong in the gearbox but check the transmission fluid level and top up if low. Also if low, check for site of leak to remedy it. Judder says to me 'imbalance' or an under damped spring. Does the judder emanate from one end (transmission) or one side (wheel) predominantly. Has the judder manifested itself just on its own or is it after having had some work done to the car.
Check wheels for balance - could be a balance weight has been lost, at the same time check the action of the shock absorbers. Check the rear engine/gearbox mount for integrity; its towards the rear of the gearbox and sits on a transmission tunnel cross-member . Now check the front prop to gearbox doughnut coupling, then the central bearing and finally the rear prop to differential doughnut coupling; all should be sound. Signs of splitting of the rubber around the bolt mounts in the doughnuts or a lot of lateral play in the central bearing are indicators for renewal.

I have a Merc c220 cdi 2001.The kickdown works only sometimes and then only once per journey. It will not travel above 85 mph (not that this is a problem).Manually shifting the auto into lower gears works...

Hi Ray
This is an unusual problem the gearbox change is controlled electronically so normally the first thing to do is get the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic machine ( this would also normally require a proper mercedes start diagnostic and not a cheap one at the local garage) But assuming it is electronic you have 2 choices the gearbox control module located in the car just below the gear change lever and the main electronic control located in the oil pan of the gearbox not so easy to access, Just a thought have you ever spilt a beverage such as coffee or soda over the gear lever area ?
as I have seen this problem before with a lack of gear selection it had shorted the module, So I guess for the cheapest first stop I would locate a second hand module from the breakers yard and try this first it should be a easy DIY anything more will require some proper mechanical skills hope this is of some help, Just a last minute thought have you checked underneath for a transmission oil leak as the oil may just be low this model suffers with the "O" ring around the electronic plug failing and causing a leak its located on the right hand side of the box just above the oil pan at the front edge.
