Hello. It seems your Buick's engine is 'flooded' with gas in one or more cylinders. This will cause the engine to 'race' because of a fire in one or more cylinders. The engine gets to high rpm and stays there; this is not good! Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.
If you hit the Rev Limiter on a Ford, it will simply bounce the rev back down, to protect the Engine. So, no high Revs. But, you should be able to bring it slowly to a High RPM. That is normal. If there are no Check Engine Light on. You are most likely hitting the rev Limit and need to stop.
It should not be hitting the flywheel. You need a professional to look into this problem with a full function scanner to watch the crank sensor signal in real time.
Yes there is a governor which limits the rpm to 2500 rpm. It ha been limited because beyond this rev, the engine gets overheated and if kept running it that condition would slowly but surely damage the engine badly. Once you have reached the limit naturally your cruise control will stop working since its supposed to maintain that speed, which is not allowed by the governor. This governor can be removed but then you will have to risk damaging your engine fatally........................sodeep
Honestly I wish I could offer you more info, if it revs now that eliminates the convertor, only I can figure is when you got it to rev you were "blowing the soot out" LOL I hope I have helped you some if so please rate me accordingly.
