Since it is difficult to determine what kind of sound you are describing, I am going to guess at a loud cooling fan.
Check under your hood. Is your Jeep equipped with electric cooling fans or does it have a belt driven cooling fan?
IF belt driven, the fan clutch could be stuck. This will cause the cooling fan to rotate at full engine speed. It will be loud and cause a drag on the engine.
If stuck, then you'll need to replace the fan clutch.
Check it out, then let us know what you find.

A loud engine can mean a lot of things, could be worn valves piston rings etc, I myself have round the clock engine and it was noisy, but i used a can of engine restorer, and noticed with in ten minutes the difference, its expensive but on an old warn engine it had done the trick. might even help yours, it does not really matter how meany oil changes you do an engine will wear a bit, if its pulling ok with no difference then its not a really serious problem, it could just be a blowing exhaust manifold or downpipe, or even a damaged air filter. check these parts look for cracks in the manifold as these when the engine gets hot will expand, even just a tinny crack can make a loud noise. check the the manifold seal to the engine is good, good way to test the seal is water in a squeezer bottle or spray, or even just look for blow marks on the engine. also check the engine oil cap, check it for a mayo looking oil color this can be a sign that the oil is getting damp or water is getting into the oil. this can also change the sound of the engine as the oil has become contaminated, oil can have a bit of water in there but its usually heated away with engine use. i hope this items help you find your problem.
SOURCE: 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee running very loud.
does it have the 4.0L motor ? if so open the hood stand off to the side where the exhaust bots to the head and have some one rev it up quick if its coming fron under the hood by the engine the exhaust manifol is cracked. The 4.0L jeeps have had lots of problems with this.
SOURCE: I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 6 cyl,
shifting is regulated by the valve body, governor and shift control module and solenoids...The bubbles bother me...Is it overfull ? If not, the filter or valve body may be loose and allowing air into the system and bleeding off pressure...however, this should make the unit slip.
Before it develops into something serious have a reputable shop check it out!!! (there are no "user friendly" items inside except the throttle cable, filter and checking valve body to make sure it's not loose (only saw that once on a recent rebuild though)
SOURCE: proper way to check transmission fluid
You always check transmission fluid with it running and in park,If your dip stick has a place on it for cold use it cold,Other wise it should be on the full mark, you might want to look under your jeep for any new leaks!
Testimonial: "thanks alot, thats what I thought, no leaks that I can see, I guess they didn't fill it all the way back up"
