VW GOLF MK3 GTI 8v starting problems

I have a VW GOLF MK3 1995 GTI 8v I have intermitent problems when starting the car which seems to be more problematic in the rain but can equally happen just as badly in the dry.
I had an engine sensor replaced a while back as well as the coil.
I have cleaned thoroughly the spark plugs distributer and leads - although these look a little tired.
The Engine turns over and then dies out not on the road as when it starts it keeps on going so its not like the other boys where the car dies out whilst driving.
My alternator is good and so is the battery - the car is also started with all lights and fans turned off.
At the moment when it happens i have to start the car in 2nd and let the inertia kick it into action whilst i push the clutch in and give it the revvs but this is not always the answer - Please help someone.
P>S
I have heard Lambda sensor in the Exhaust pipe
I have heard the Engine crank sensor
As well as the ignition coil

Without spending a fortune on this 15yr old can I get a more precise solution from one of you heroes out there?

I think it could be the ignition coil, give that a check as they tend to go at that age, I've had a similar problem myself. If it's busted then a replacement should cost around £30 ish, (£80 if you get someone else to do it!!!) Check your distributor as well, as you might need to change the head and the rotor arm (make sure you mark the leads!!!) Hope this helps! D

My mk3 1996 16v 2ltr was playing up, wouldnt start when cold, wouldnt rev above 4500-5000. I changed the ignition switch, ecu relay, petrol pump relay, plugs, plug leads, coil, and finally, checked the hall sender on the dizzy, and found a broken wire in the dizzy body. Got a 2nd hand dizzy from a breakers for 40 quid, (150 or more new) and all is well. (I actually took the car to two garages and they couldnt find the problems, no faults registered on vagcom).

Only thing i can think of. if its definitely more intermittent in the rain, maybe your ecy is getting wet. its under the plastic cover below your cars front wiper blades.

i recomend getting a new engine speed sensor my car was having very similar problems. The car can give you error codes to tell you what your problem could be there is a set of four codes that youll need to know so first look up how to get error codes on your car its more simple than you may think mine was found inside my ashtray... anyway mine was 2-1-1-1 the amount of times my check engine light flashed 2-1-1-1 means engine speed sensor i then replaced it and everythings good
    untill the next problem

to be honest with you, stop throwing parts at this car and have it diagnosed properly by a good technician.

I drive a 1997 golf 3 GTI 16V. The car can't start when the oil temperature goes beyond 88 degrees celsius from the onboard computer, I have to wait for it to cool down for a while before starting. What...

Did you resolve this?
I drive a mk3 golf GTI 8V and mine starts fine but after driving for about 3 minutes (engine warms up) it starts to misfire, the car stalls and then you can't start it again until the engine has cooled. Does this sound similar?

I have a vw golf gti mk3 2ltr 8v i have had a cliiford g5 fitted however since having it fitted the car keeps cutting out after about 10 minutes. i have had a diagnostics test done and has come up saying...

Unless you have a lot of VW specific diagnostic equipment - don't even try to do that. VW's are VERY FUSSY with their alarm systems and immobilizer; you even run into problems if you change the factory radio for an aftermarket, unless you buy the by-pass solenoid set up for your car with the radio. You might try to contact "Ron" at obd2tech.com and find out, if he can help you.
