First you need to find out what is causing the smoke. What colour is the smoke?
White Exhaust smoke is usually coolant getting into the cylinders.
Blue Exhaust smoke is usually Oil getting into the cylinders and burning with the fuel.
Black Exhaust smoke is caused by the fuel to air mixture being too rich. This could be your Air Filter so check it is clean.
A common cause of Blue or White smoke is a blown head gasket. This can also show up as oil in the coolant tank and/or a 'mayonnaise' like buildup inside the Oil filler hole.
CHECK DIESEL INJECTORS, SEE IF THE EXHAUST SMOKES OR SMELL RICH, LESSEN TO THE EXHAUST OR PUT YOUR HAND ON FRONT OF THE TAIL PIPE, SEE IF IT FEELS EVEN AND SMOOTH OR DO YOU FEEL IS MISSION, COULD BE A CLOGGED INJECTOR, BAD INJECTION PUMP, A BAD FUEL FILTER, LARK OF FUEL,
Black smoke indicates running "rich" (using excessive fuel) sounds like an injector is sticking open. I would first run a strong fuel system cleaner through it. (Maybe even have a professional fuel system cleaning) Ques? When was last tune up? A dirty air filter would contribute, but not make alot of black smoke.
You may have a bad fuel injector or in need of a tune up badly. The early fuel injection (throttle body) had a single fuel injector that would clog and not spray fuel in a mist but would dump fuel. Does it run rough at idle? That is a good indicator. Some are rebuildable but I would suggest replacement. If you have not had a tune up in a while that should be done too.
check for a vacumn leak, my buddy has a 96 dually that did that, found out it was his temp sensor to the computor, was showing a negative # when i tested it,he replaced it and it fixed everything! He couldn't believe it LOL
What that means, as you have noticed, is that you have a problem with the vehicle which is causing the computer to deliver more fuel than needed to the engine. Running Rich = too much fuel. Running Lean = too little fuel. There are many reasons why your engine would be running rich, and could be anything from a malfunctioning sensor to a vacuum leak to a leak in the exhaust ahead of the oxygen sensor.
You can drive it while running rich temporarily, but it can cause issues with fouling the spark plugs and damaging the catalytic converter over time.
Fuel pumps just supply fuel to the carb. Either they work or don't
work. I would make sure that the mixture screws on the carb are set
properly. Turn the screws in to lean out the mixture, do one at a time.
You want to turn the screws in to the point where the jeep will start
to idle rough and then back out a 1/2 turn. Check your timing also. If
the jeep has alot of miles on it, the timing chain will stretch and
it's possible that you cannot get the correct timing.
