I have a oil leak in my Cadillac 2007 DTS. It drops "1%" oil life according to the dash appx every week. Jiffy Lube mechanics told me it needs immediate attention but they don't fix leaks. I didn't want to spend dealer price of labor to fix something that was simple enough to get done by a "good" mechanic. Is an oil leak and power steering leak a very detailed repair job for my car that I shouldn't let anyone but a Cadillac expert attempt to repair? It's usually twice the price to get work done at the dealer mainetenance.

First thing to do is determine where the leak is from and then you will be able to determine your cost. It is not that hard of issue to repair as long as you can get to it to repair.

probably the rack is restricted or valve stuck in rack and pinnion steer .belt alignment also

display info and then hold reset for 16seconds it will ask oil life reset 100 pecent yes or no press yes

Got an older car? Find an older mechanic...Someone who remembers there is an engine under the hood, not just electronics.
Typically you have nearly a one quart "leeway" on overfill. Depending upon where the leak is, you could try using an engine sealer/conditioner like the one made by Lucas...I've used it and it's pretty good. Remember though...It took a long time to develop a leak, it will take some time to soften the leaking seal and slow or stop the leak. And...there isn't a chemical in the world that will replace a failed part.

there are a few things to consider first,1. is it the bearing alone worn? you have to check the condition of the crank shaft jurnel were the bearing works,if ok then you are good togo but if not then you are looking at either machine shop work on the shaft or replacing it with a used unit in good condition since cost is a factor, or you can take the chance and put up the bearing as is and hope for the best,to save time and if you'r up to it look for a used engine in good condition and swap the hole assembly out should take a week end with some help from the guys, any way if you insist. 1. you drop the sump, find the # 1 main bearing cap # should be stamped on it re move the two bolts and remove cap,take note of mounting, remove bearing halfs, to remove bearing half on block use a flat head screw driver and push it around the jurnel there should be mounting tabs on bearing to install take the bearing half for the block place oil on inner face and slide int place making shore tab fits in mounting goove install cap half bearing and install tourque bolts re install sump refill engine oil and hop for the best

I dont think there is a connection between an oil change and the gallons per mile.
With that age car, I suggest a Terra engine clean. It will blow away nine years of gunk from the spark plugs, fuel injectors, cylinders and exhaust. Should give you more power, more miles..

Should I be using synthetic oil in my '06 Cad DTS? Just took it to Jiffy Lube and they charged me $111.00...said it required synthetic. Haven't been using that! Think I was ripped off!!

You can use whatever you want.
You were not ripped off. That would be Fraud (ripped off) charged for a service not performed
You excepted a pitchmans offer, to sell you something

Never go to any quick lube places
Read up on the horror stories on the web,as well as Fraud

Most people get the oil drain plug stripped,wrong fluid,in wrong places,your lucky, you can still drive it.

Educate yourself. You have an owners manual,you have on your oil fill cap or close by ,what oil to use,you can call or stop by a dealer and ask questions.

I was told I have a small oil leak (lost 1/2 quart of oil after going 5400 miles by the Jiffy Lube staff. Is this something my normal mechanic can fix?

Yes a regular certified mechanic should be able to fix any oil leak without to much trouble.Some leaks can be a bit more extensive and costly to repair but on the norm ANY mechanic should be able to fix it..

you need to take the vehicle to a real mechanic. Jiffy lube employes are not mechanics. Change your oil at jiffy lube and get mechanical work done at a reputable auto dealer or mechanic shop.
