REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
On all engines except the 2UZ-FE, the starter is external, mounted in
a conventional manner, alongside the engine block. One the 2UZ-FE,
however, the starter is mounted in the 'V' of the engine, between the
cylinder head banks. The entire intake manifold assembly must be removed
to access the starter motor and solenoid. (Toyota calls the solenoid a
"magnetic switch.")

SOURCE: replace starter
Disconnect the battery, then crawl under the truck and locate the starter, remove the plug going to the solenoid (small brown lead w plastic clip) . then the power wire that goes from the battery to the main starter terminal (12 mm nut) locate the 2 starter bolts 14 mm and unbolt the starter and remove. install in reverse order. ON the 4 wheel drives you may need to remove the skid plates over the bottom of the engine to access the starter.

Hi,
1.Raise the hood of your Tacoma. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench and isolate the cable away from the battery
2.Raise the hood of your Tacoma. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench and isolate the cable away from the battery
3.Remove the nut securing the battery cable to the starter body with a wrench. Pull the battery cable off the post away from the starter. Pull the other wiring connection straight out of the connector.
4.Remove the mounting bolts securing the starter body to the bell housing with a socket and ratchet. Support the starter body while you remove the mounting bolts, then pull the starter out of the bell housing.
Good luck!!!
