Problem for Volkswagen 1999 Jetta Hood latch cable broken need to get under the hood

When you say: Grill hood release is broken
which component are you talking about ?
Is the cable that runs from inside the cabin to the latch mechanism broken, or
is the actual latch mechanism is what broke.

try pressing down on edge of the hood as someone pulls the release handle. Or shake hood up and down while pulling the release cable. The cable may have broken at the latch end.

Under the car:
You will be able to open the hood if you pull off your splash guard and use a long long flat head screwdriver or something like that. You'll see the hood latch in front of the radiator with the cable attached to it at the top near the hood, put it on the drivers side edge of the bottom of the latch and pry to the passenger side, the lever moves from the drivers side to the passengers side, the cable basically pulls the top of it to achieve this. so your doing the same thing on the bottom with the screwdriver.



Release the latch from underneath by the lever that you have to pry towards the passenger side. Then open the hood, and replace the safety release mechanism broken part.

You'lll need a pair of large pliers, or vice grips. If there's not enough room or not enough cable to get a hold on under the dash, find the cable under the hood. It will have a protective sheath of some kind, so ti will look like a large diameter electrical wire. You may have to remove some of the sheath, or insulation,or whatever you want to call it. Remove enough to allow you to grasp the cable and pull it far enough to release the hood latch.

if may have cushions that open to the trunk thru the back seats

Very common problem with the dodges, look under your dash and you will see where the probably now broken cable use to connect. You can pull it by hand to release the hood, They are not hard to replace, just unbolt the handle unit and bolt in the new one. The cable usually just snaps into a holder on the bracket under the dash. Some if these vehicles came with the hood cable that goes all the way to the hood release latch under the hood if that is the case you can still open the hood you just have to do it from under the car in the front. They are not designed to open from the outside. Why can't you get inside?

well if the cable snapped you will need to try to get the front grill to pop out with out breaking it and look up and in to get to the little latch for the hood release.

Get a long screwdriver and try to release the secondary latch that way. Or if you have small hands reach up under the hood and pull the secondary latch toward the left.

on the left side of the drivers side their is a panel with the hood release Pull off the cover of the hood release and you will see a cable connected to the hood release. take some pliers and give it a good pull.
if you dont hear a click, have someone pull the hood up while you pull on the hood release cable. next their will be little space to take off the grille for easier acces. take off the grille carefully by prying it off carefully on each side. push the grill up and pull it towards you going up then down.
Now all you have to do is stick a flathead screwdriver or philips. and on the bottom of the hood release on the hood stick the screwdriver under the release and push the screw driver down while pushing the hood up.
