What would cause a loud roaring in the back seat of my 2001 Monte Carlo as I am driving?

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2010

It sounds like the back tires may be roaring loudly.

I agree, either the wheel bearing or the ring bearing in the rear end. My Plymouth Fury III (that is going back a bit) had a cracked ring bearing and roared loudly.

That roaring noise should be a wheel bearing. Jack up the rear wheels and spin the tires by hand. You can hear a grinding noise if the noise inside the car is as load as you state.. The only other noise that will be like that is the differental gears inside the drive axle

Roaring noise in front end of Monte Carlo 2001 the faster I go the faster it goes. Does not happen when I idle or rev the motor only when I'm driving?

A common problem with this generation of MC's is the ISS, or intermediate steering shaft. The shaft turns with the wheels and does exactly what you describe. If it isn't too far gone, a repair shop can do a lube job on it and some more parts on your front end to fix the symptom. If it is too far gone, you will need a new ISS.

There are other front end problems (power steering, wheel hubs, axles, brake rotors, etc.) that will cause similar noises and symptoms. If you aren't highly skilled and mechanically inclined, it is much better to just take the car into a repair shop for a diagnosis and/or estimate than to throw parts and labor at the general area. If somebody makes a bad judgement or two, the cost of replacing parts that do not eliminate the root cause will quickly add up to more than the cost of a proper repair. Not to mention the time involved. 25362372-awph1b3yhxdrnyqdcrsrelkr-5-0.jpg

2001 monte carlo ls loud squealing when cold start comes from front very loud usally stops wheeten you drv off but at times squels for a few kilom

Check your belts for dried fluid on them because this happened to my '95 Monte, the radiator pipes leaked onto the belts then dried and caused the squeaking.
