Torque converter question.

This will sound like a strange question, but please bear with me. Will turning the steering wheel lock to lock while stationary with the car in drive put some strain on the torque converter and possibly damage it. Someone told me this, but i did not think steering had anything to do with the powertrain. I know that when you turn the wheel stationary you can hear a little strain on the brakes but i did not think that was hurting anything. I know it can harm the steering and tires, but i would think that would be it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Your torque converter Is there only to convert the rotation of the engine into hydrolic pressure for the transmission. Turning the steering wheel wouldnt have ANY affect on the torque converter and wouldn't tear it up. If you have ever had a belt break on a car while driving, you may recall that steering the vehical becam harder as the vehicle slowed. This is becasue the power steering system is primarily used (and works its hardest) at lower (like parking lot) speeds.

The device that gives the power steering it Hydrolic pressure and such, is the "Power Steering Pump" this is only drivin by the engine's rotation via a belt(serpintine or what have you) Now, this can be damaged by that sort of activity, as whell as the rack and pinion that pushes and pulls the wheels (thus turning the vehicle). Now the Steering Rack is not a cheap piece to replace.

In my advise, Heed if you like, i wouldn't continue that unless you have deeper pockets than i and don't mind throwing it away! lol Reason is it does put un nessisary strain on the power steering components that will eventually fail because of the ammount of heat generated by the endless back and fourth (see-saw) motion of the steering rack, and the devices that give it power.

But, On a lighter note... there is not transmission fluid in the powersteering system(this is why they sell two different types of fluid.. haha) and the torque converter is not responcible for powering in anyway, the power steering system.

Hope this helps your understanding.

your biggest problemmay be the power steering return hose,or the rack pinion, they both are designedto control pressure

Transmission issue

turning the steering wheel lock to lock can NOT damage anything in the transmission but if you hold it for extended periods of time you can damage the power steering pump.

Transmission issue

No it should not cause any strain on the torque converter, however by doing so while idling the power steering system has less oil pressure due to resistance and will make an odd sound and may slow down your idle more.

Won't even effect the torque converter. Two totally different systems as you thought.

Transmission issue

I think i just answered this question a couple days ago... but anyways. No it will not cause any damage to the torque converter whatsoever. You may be hearing the power steering pump whining - which is completely normal. Just dont hold the steering all the way to one side for more than 5 seconds, as this can damage the power steering pump.

Transmission issue

As this is a front wheel drive car it may screw up your front drive joints, but your torque converter is just a giant fluid pump and things like driving with two feet or power braking could damage it but wouldn't think what you descibe could screw up your torque converter,Other things in your trans maybe ,but not that.Well just my 2 cents worth.

turning or putting "strain" on the steering WILL NOT have any effect or damage to the torque convertor. However, sitting stationary for log periods of time with the vehicle in gear can cause damge on the torque convertor over time.

Torque converter question.

No, it wont affect the torque converter whatsoever. The only way you could damage the transmission is by having it in drive, brakes applied, revving the engine up. That will heat the transmission up very quickly. But the steering wont have anything to do with it.
