Ford Pick-Ups/Bronco 1976-1986 Repair Guide Water Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

6-300 Engines

  1. Drain the cooling system.
CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
  2. Remove the drive belt, fan, fan spacer, fan shroud, if so equipped, and water pump pulley.
  3. Remove the alternator pivot arm from the pump.
  4. Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump.
  5. Remove the water pump.
  6. Before installing the old water pump, clean the gasket mounting surfaces on the pump and on the cylinder block. If a new water pump is being installed, remove the heater hose fitting from the old pump and install it on the new one. Coat the new gaskets with sealer on both sides and install the water pump in the reverse order of removal. Torque the mounting bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.

  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, heater hose and by-pass hose at the water pump. Remove the drive belts, fan, fan spacer and pulley. Remove the fan shroud, if so equipped.
  4. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt and the bolt attaching the alternator adjusting arm to the water pump. Remove the power steering pump bracket from the water pump and position it out of the way.
  5. If necessary, remove the air conditioner compressor and bracket. The refrigerant lines should remain connected.
  6. Remove the bolts securing the water pump to the timing chain cover and remove the water pump.
  7. Thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces of all gasket material.
  8. Install the water pump in the reverse order of removal, using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. in the sequence shown.

be no more than 11/4 in. long

        Disconnect both battery ground cables.

        Drain the cooling system.

    CAUTION

When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are
attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to
drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the
ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the
coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is

        Remove the radiator shroud halves.

Remove the fan clutch and fan.

The fan clutch bolts are left hand thread. Remove them by turning
    them clockwise.

Remove the power steering pump belt.

Remove the air conditioning compressor belt.

Remove the vacuum pump drive belt.

        Remove the alternator drive belt.

        Remove the water pump pulley.

Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump.

If you're installing a new pump, remove the heater hose fitting
from the old pump at this time.

Remove the alternator adjusting arm and bracket.

Unbolt the air conditioning compressor and position it out of the
way. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE REFRIGERANT LINES!

Remove the air conditioning compressor brackets.

Unbolt the power steering pump and bracket and position it out of
the way. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE POWER STEERING FLUID LINES!

Remove the bolts attaching the water pump to the front cover and
        lift off the pump.

Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the pump and front cover.

Get a hold of two dowel pins - anything that will fit into 2
mounting bolt holes in the front cover. You'll need these to ensure
proper bolt hole alignment when you're installing the water pump.

Using a new gasket, position the water pump over the dowel pins
and into place on the front cover.

Install the attaching bolts. The 2 top center and 2 bottom center
bolts must be coated with RTV silicone sealant prior to installation.
Also, these 4 bolts are a different length than the other bolts. Torque
the bolts to 14 ft. lbs.

        Install the water pump pulley.

Wrap the heater hose fitting threads with Teflon® tape and screw
it into the water pump. Torque it to 18 ft. lbs.

Connect the heater hose to the pump.

Install the power steering pump and bracket. Install the belt.

Install the air conditioning compressor bracket.

Install the air conditioning compressor. Install the belt.

Install the alternator adjusting arm and install the belt.

Install the vacuum pump drive belt.

        Adjust all the drive belts.

Install the fan and clutch. Remember that the bolts are left hand
thread. Turn them counterclockwise to tighten them. Torque them to 45
        ft. lbs.

        Install the fan shroud halves.

Fill and bleed the cooling system.

        Connect the battery ground cables.

Start the engine and check for leaks.

Hope this help (remember rated and comment this help). Good luck.

Hi:
I don't know exactly what engine you have, but here is the basic process for changing a water pump:

Drain the radiator . loosen and remove all belts.
Remove the fan assembly, and the shroud from the engine side of the radiator.
Remove the radiator.
Inspect and remove the radiator hoses from the engine. The waterpump is held in place on the engine by approx 5-6 bolts. Remove all and carefully remove the water pump from the engine.

Clean the engine surfaces of all old gasket material.
Install the new waterpump and gasket with the recomended sealant as needed. Install all bolts and torque them to the proper tightness.
Install the radiator, hoses, shroud and fan .
Install all drive belts.
Fill engine and radiator with fresh coolant,
start engine and check for leaks.

Hope this helps,

Don't know where to poor my oil in my 1981 ford f100. there is not filler tube

there shouldn't be a filler tube, just a dipstick tube for checking the oil level. to put the oil in the engine, there should be a oil cap on the right hand side valve cover. if the dipstick tube isn't there, you definitely need to get one from a parts yard or store, you can be losing oil from the dipstick hole that goes to the oil pan...

Ned to now wat the firing order for dist cop shood be for a 1987 ford f100 pick-up truck 300sixcylender stick shift model#333

The F100 ended in 1983, so there is some confusion on your 1987 Ford F100. The F150 started in 1983 and was available in 1987, but not the F100. You have this listed under the 1981 Ford F100 category.
The 300 CID = 4.9L In-Line (Straight) 6-Cylinder.
In order to best answer your question I have included both the 1981 F100 4.9L and 1987 F150 4.9L below. The only difference is with the Distributor Cap Configuration and Connections.

For the 1981 F100 300cid=4.9L:
Firing order:
1-5-3-6-2-4
Cylinders:

Distributor:

2

For the 1987 F150 300cid=4.9L:

Ford F100 Truck Fuel Pump

Hi,

To my knowledge, most Ford models of this year uses a mechanical (diaphragm type) fuel pump not electrical. However, it is possible to install an aftermarket electric fuel pump in lieu of the mechanical pump. If this was done to your Ford F 100, it would either be either near the carbs or the fuel tank, follow the fuel line.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
