Here are the issues with my 2000 Subaru Legacy L with 5 speed manual transmission: 1. ABS light illuminates when transmission is put in reverse and remains illuminated until car is turned off. 2. Reverse lights illuminate when brake pedal is actuated, regardless of gear selected. (brake lights work normally) 3. Engine remains running when key is turned off and transmission is in reverse. If you keep the key in off position and take transmission out of reverse engine will stop and all electrics turn off as normal. Car turns off normally when in all forward gears and neutral.

These assorted problems usually come from the control modules, in this case the transmission control module (TCM)
First, reset al ECM' by removing the battery negative terminal for a minute or so then re-fit it. This reset should cure all your problems. If not I shall consult my TSB's after you post the results of the reset.

Need diagram for 1995 subaru legacy automatic transmission. 176K , Reverse went out about 10 months ago but all other gears shift fine. Have driven from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe 4/5 times with no...

It's a bad solenoid. Reverse and low gears work off the same set of clutches. If you have first gears , then its a solenoid problem. I would first start by pulling plugs, transmission, TCM and everything in between. Check for corrosion, Use an ohm meter and check the wires for continuity. On some models the safety neutral switch/ range selector switch has a lot to do with how the transmission shifts. If the tcm can't read the switch it wont send power to the solenoid. so far I haven't found a place that will sell just solenoids. You have to buy the whole package. These start at about $200.00

I did an oil change on my subaru legacy 2000 and now it's starts but once it's in reverse or drive it wont [email protected]

I would bet you drained the transmission oil and not the engine oil. It is a pretty common mistake.

How much oil did you add when you where done. is the oil level on the oil dipstick now reading overfilled? Is there any fluid on the transmission dipstick?
