I have a 1998 BMW 740i. My problem is that when y put the car in gear (Drive) it goes foward but real SLOW. I push the gas pedal but nothing and when i shift reverse its OK. When i have it in Drive and i push the Gas pedal it starts making this FUNNY noise (Rrrrrrr) in the ABS box next to the MOTOR......Any Sugestions?

Before you make any other moves, I would try having the transmission flushed and refilled and filters changed and if that doesn't work, you may have burned out the modulator so you may have to shop around for another transmission or have that one rebuilt, whichever would be feasibly financial for you.

How old is the gearbox oil? In some cases, older oil (higher viscosity when old) will be too "thick" in colder weather and inhibit the synchro on your gears from slipping into 1st gear. The reason it only happens in 1st, is 'cause the shifting mechanism on the forward change is finer than that of the reverse change.
POSSIBLE Solution: Replace the gearbox oil with a lower viscosity ie. "thinner" oil.

your power steering pump should have a adjusting pinion nut.you loosen the pinion nut to loosen pump so you can replace belt.or you have a automatic belt tensionener you rotate tensioner clockwise to replace or remove belt.

it is a sealed trans. you will have to bring it to BMW to have them take a look.... they dont put a dip stick on that car and many other's so you can't do anything except bring it to them to have it worked on... sorry for the bad news.... hope this helps you
