If your 1993 Ford Explorer XLT is not engaging in reverse, but will roll backwards if pushed in neutral, there are a few things that could be causing the issue:
Transmission fluid: Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Low or dirty transmission fluid can cause issues with shifting and engagement.
Transmission linkage: The linkage that connects the transmission shifter to the transmission may be damaged or misaligned. Check the linkage for any signs of damage or misalignment.
Transmission solenoid: The transmission solenoid that controls the engagement of reverse gear may be malfunctioning. A diagnostic scan tool can be used to check for any error codes related to the solenoid.
Internal transmission issues: It's possible that there is an internal issue with the transmission, such as a damaged gear or worn clutch. A transmission rebuild or replacement may be necessary in this case.
It's best to have a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the issue, as transmission repairs can be complex and require specialized knowledge and equipment. They can properly diagnose the issue and recommend the best course of action to get your vehicle back in working order.

It does not have a traditional dipstick and tube. Ford changed over to using a plug in the side of the transmission like manual transmissions use. There are some DIY videos on YouTube.
check make sure transmission fluid not too low or could have plugged transmission filter.or code scan for faulty transmission fluid pressure sensor or transmission range sensor bad or out of adjustment.transmission could have failed.garage has to run fluid pressure test see if transmission failed or you could have faulty shift solenoid..
More than likely it is the same as the other 2003 transmissions. The shift selonoid is a steel rod that slides inside an aluminum block. After a few years of shifting, the aluminum block starts wearing out and fluid slips past the rod. this has been fixed by a transmission rebuild for many people at the cost of several thousand dollars. I fixed my 2003 xlt with a selonoid "fix" kit I purchased off of a person on ebay. I actually have a second kit I purchased from him that i ended up not needing. (was gonna fix a friends explorer but he traded it in). would not mind recooping some of my cash. you can check out his ebay site here.
How do I change the 2003 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 L Flex Fuel -Auto Trans 2wd Camshaft synchronizer and sensor . Do I need any special tools ? Are there after market parts that are precise replacements for the OEM parts ?
on the bottom of the transmission pan you will find a nut with a hex or torx in the middle you remove the center plug when the truck is hot and running on a level serface the trans fluod will dribble out if it does not dribble out it is low if it runs out fast a steedy streem it is over full now their is a part that screws into this for a fill if you remove the pan you will see how it works the pan has a pipe/ stack that when full of fluid the top of the pipe is at the full point if you remove the large nut the stack and plug will come out the best way to change the trans fluid is take it to some place that has a fluid exchange equment this will get all the fluid out including the torque converter
