What causes a crankshaft to crack? I got an oil change and a new air filter, and later that day my car wouldn't start and I was told that my crankshaft was cracked.

COLD oil when introduced into a HOT engine CAN cause the crankshaft to crack just as it would any other time on any other material. Glass is a good example of this. The temperature of the Shaft is hot and the quick cooling that accompanies the cold oil can cause the hot (enlarged) shaft to cool (shrink) at one end and not the other. Hope this helps you sir.

change the crankshaft postion sensor and the mass airflow sensor and the Idle AIr Temperature sensor to make sure im most likely sure ist the crankshaft sensor also make sure that you have a clean air filter not enought clean air could cause the car to stall also inspect your injectors make sure that they arent cracked or leaking i would put some fuel injector cleaner just to be sure

first remove the plugs and try to turn the engine by hand(slowly), if the engine locks stop, remove valve covers and check each valve keeper, i think you may have dropped one , if not a nut or washer may have found its way into the piston chamber

Cars starts and dies five seconds later

try changing the fuel filter. with that many miles on it could be clogged. most people forget all about the fuel filter which is typically on the passenger side on the frame rail near the tire well.
