SOURCE: timing belt settings
the tension setting for the belt?
or the timing marks? the timing marks differ. best set cyl. no 1 to tdc.. take out no. 1 spark plug and put sumthin long and thin down the hole.. like a long quarter drive extension.. and check to see that cyl 1 is at tdc.. then set your cam to the OT marks marked on the cam pulley and rocker cover... then you have to set the distributor also.. slacken the 13mm bolt for the dizzy clamp... you will find a line on the lip of the dizzy body.. this needs to align with the middle of rotor arm tip... (sumtimes a mark on the roror arm tip)... tension belt and your timing is set.. set your timing incorrectly and the car will run rough and not rev past 5k...
SOURCE: golf gti 2.0 8v keeps cutting out now it wont start
Just found your problem while looking for solutions to my own. My 2.0 8v 3door 97 golf gti can also cut out after driving for two or three minutes. Works fine one day then dies instantly 5 times the next...not a safe thing to happen pulling out of a junction!! Have researched problem and been told that it's probably fixable for £12-15. The "Hall Sender Relay" which is the fancy name for the ecu's power supply relay can go on the blink and cut power at any time causing instant shutdown...just like turning off the ignition key. Part number is 165906381 and available from a local vw dealer usually overnight. I'm fitting mine tomorrow 4/4/09...fingers crossed!
Hope this helps others...worth a try for the cost involved.
