The Mechanic was right and the symptoms you have would not go away with a plug change. He appears honest.
This is a difficult problem, reason being that the Thermostat of your engine would hold the same operating Temperature in Winter or Summer. But under the hood Temperatures could be greater in warmer weather. Some consideration should be given to whether the truck is quitting when moving or at idle. As moving air cools, the engine bay temperature would drop with the truck in motion.
Try shutting off the A/C. The A/C condenser creates heat in the engine bay. The fan clutch could also be bad. This would be checked by RPM. You could have a bad coil, or Ignition relay. You may be able to see if the spark is Yellow or absent when the truck quits.
Let me know what you find. The self-diagnostics in your truck would report other problems.
Very cold climate/weather, I'd run 5 w 30. Warmer/hot weather 10 w 40. Here is Southern Ontario Canada, I run 5 w 30 or 10 w 30 winter and 10 w 40 summer.
Mine did the same thing...at 42F degrees, run bad. After it warm up, it would be fine. This would only happen in the winter. It would throw a code saying it was lean in Bank 1 or 2. The issue is a contraction of the intake gasket due to the cold weather, when it contracts, it leaks air. There is a new, improved gasket now from GM, or get a Felpro from major auto stores and it will work fine. I consistently had the problem every winter, and this has fixed the problem for the last 3-4 years.
Sounds like the coil has gone bad. This is usually the syptoms of this. When it is in the non crand status cool the coil down quickly with ice and see if it doesnt crank.
This indicates bearing wear or a plugged oil screen on the pump pickup. First have the actual oil pressure checked with a reliable mechanical gauge. Oil pressure readings will change with ambient temps because the oil is cooled down while in the pan. As weather gets warmer, it does not cool as much so it gets a bit thinner and is able to go around worn bearings easier. A bearing job is expensive and requires engine removal to do it correctly.
