the name of this transmission is hydrAmatic not hydrOmatic it is made by General Motors , i cant find a reference to g14 ,look for serial number begining TH___ or 4L or 4T as these cover the age of your vehicle
The neutral safety switch is faulty which would explain why sometimes you have to position it in neutral for it to start. The switch is located on side of the transmission,It has a long wiring harness that runs up near the transmission dipstick tube.U can purchase that switch at advance auto.
The correct procedure should be described in detail in your owner/operation manual.
For a 2004, 90 % sure that if it's a quadra trac you have to immobilize the vehicule, put your transmission shifter to neutral keeping foot on the brake obviously, engage the low on transfer case pulling the transfer case shifter, engage the transmission to drive
If it's a select track, normally you have to keep the vehicule moving very slowly (2 mph), move the transmission shifter to neutral, push the transfer case shifter to the right and pull it firmly. Once transfer case engaged, put back the transmission shifter to drive.
It could take few seconds to engage and disengage depending on the temperature and road condition. Do not try it on dry surface (preferable on mud, snow and wet surface). Drive at low speed because you will feel that it's very low geared.
By the way, follow the reverse process to reestablish normal mode
Make sure the shifter is all the way into the Park position when you park. If it's not, the computer won't allow the vehicle to start. It may need to be adjusted, but I would probably just deal with it rather than spend the money, myself. Start bumping it towards Park everytime you get in and get ready to start it. Good luck.
Try to check the trans mission gears of your 1995 jeep grand cherokee. The shift fork and the clutch sleeve of the trans mission is locking to the other gears .And then also check the starter motor and its solenoid.if the starter motor solenoid is destroyed or worn out replace .
Hit the shifter on the top with a good hit to push it down, sometimes the "T" handle will come up. The handle comes up and out if you have to replace the bezel.
