it could be your mass air flow sensor? try checking that
SOURCE: where is the fuel filter located on a 2003
If you vehicle is hesitating like it is not getting gas and then takes off like it just got gas then you might want to try replacing your air filter first, because is your air filter is dirty than you might not be getting the oxygen you need to run smooth, this will also give you better gas milage. If it is still doing this than you might want to replace the fuel filter it could also be dirty, you may be getting more than gas at the station. Unless you have the professional tools to remove and replace the filter, you might consider paying a VW place to do it for about $99 that is parts & labor. All auto mechanics are not the same.

You may need a transmission flush, if one of the valves sticks in the transmission it may not make a quick decision to shift when in between gears. Worst case ...this may be a precursor to worse problems, like a transmission rebuild.

there is no code......unless you're using a vag-com?
have you disconnected the battery recently? or anything of the sort. if so, you may need to align your throttle body. anyhow, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or more. it takes at least 10 minutes for the ecu to reset, so the longer the better. now, reconnect the battery, as quickly as possible, get in and turn the key to the battery. youll hear a buzzing of sorts from the engine bay if its working. leave the key on battery for 3 minutes. the buzzing will have stopped, before 3 minutes, but after the 3 minutes, start the car. now, let it sit at idle for 3 minutes, dont touch the gas. just let it sit. after 3 minutes at idle, go for a drive and you should be all set. hope that helps.

it sounds to me like you have a probelm with your transmission. such as if the torque converter was locked up and unable to disengage. this would kill the engine as soon as you put it in reverse or forward gear. but i have never seen or heard of this problem except on old gm cars. i also wonder if your car just has a bad misfire problem. i guess it would be a big help to know if it only does this in reverse, or will the car also stall if you put it in drive?
