Transmission will not shift into next gear from starting position till about 30 mph or 3000 rpm never seems to go into overdrive there after engine runs around 2500-3000 rpm 55-60 mph and increases with increase of speed.

Prior Issues: Transmission would shift hard in warmer climate around 70 degree days after driving on the hwy for longer than 20 min periods after comming off hwy. vehicle would shift normal after sitting for awhile with normal street driving then would shift hard again after hwy driving. Only occurs during warm days cold days there is no issue.

Try changing the transmission fluid and transmission fluid filter. It is a fairly easy but kind of messy job. Just buy the new fluid and filter, Grab your metric socket set and go at it. NEVER WORK UNDERNEATH A HOT VEHICLE. You have to pull the transmission pan to do this job. When you break the gasket seal several quarts (liters) of transmission fluid will cascade down on you. Be ready for it. Don't forget that when it stops draining there is still a lot of fluid left in the pan. When you finish cleaning up the fluid clean the gunk out of the pan. Install the new filter and reinstall the pan with a new gasket. Do not over torque the pan or filter bolts. If you strip them out or break them off you will need professional help to repair it. Refill the transmission with fluid. It should take six or seven liters.

Car drives good but high rpm at 60 mph rpm is like 3000

Does your car have an overdrive or economy mode? 3000 is about right if you're going uphill at 60, your car is under heavy load or your not in overdrive. It could also be that your car hasn't shifted up to the next gear. On many automatics you can stomp on the gas pedal twice quickly, all the way to the floor, and that will make it up shift. Try that to see if that lowers the rpm's and gets it to shift up. If your car still wont up shift check the transmission fluid level with the car warmed up and running.

My 97 Saturn SL2 won't go past 30 mph. Even with

I guess my first question would be - are you saying it is slipping in 3rd gear ? If you push the gas pedal to the floor it should downshift into a lower gear.
If it is slipping, or not upshifting into 3rd gear, I'm afraid chances are the transmission is toast.
You can take it to a couple of shops for estimates but they will probably want to pull the pan and take a look inside.

CAR RUNS FINE BUT WHEN I DRIVE FASTER THEN 70 MPH THE CHECK TRANSNISSION LIGHT TURNS ON THE TRANS HAS A BANGING SOUND. IT GIVES A INCORRECT GEAR CODE. PLZ HELP

Don't drive faster than 70Mph! That is over 115 feet per second! Anyway, it's 4WD, correct? Check the fluids in the tranmission and transfer case. You transmission may need to be serviced. Limit your speed to 50-60 MPH and don't shift hard...with a lot of RPM's, when taking off and going through 1st 2nd and 3rd. Drive gently until you can have the transmission serviced.

Stick shift # Automatic RPM

That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.

2000 Volvo S40

one unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission
it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies
run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well
