make sure your plugs are gapped correctly. also make sure the plug wires are going to the proper cylinder. if the wires are messed up, it will try to start but it is firing in the wrong cylinder. check the plug wires.make sure your plugs are gapped correctly. also make sure the plug wires are going to the proper cylinder. if the wires are messed up, it will try to start but it is firing in the wrong cylinder. check the plug wires.

it is possible that your neg battery terminal could be losing contact or coil could have stopped working and im sure the oil on the spark plugs has a bit to do with the running issue . You need to change the valve cover gasket make sure nothing is cracked clean up the valve cover and engine side surface install valve cover gaskets and bolts torque em down and see what happens youll probably have to replace the spark plugs or clean them up real good
The valve cover gasket isn't hard to change. Oil on the plugs indicates a more serious problem. Smoke from the exhaust would be from rings, rich mixture, worn valve guides. It may be that the engine is overfull (that would show on the stick). Oil loss from a leaking gasket would smoke under the hood and leave oil on the engine and the ground.
test to make shore you ignition coil is working" unplug any plug wire and then try starting it...you should her the ticking from the ark of electrisity from the coil to the engine block its self...
first: be shore youve connected the spark plug wires in to the right slots on the ignition coil
second: make shore the wiring harness just upstream from the air filter is connected"without it my montero want start"
third:make shore all harmesses are connected and tight....
forth: now turn the car on..but dont start it.. and see if the check engine light goes off....
fifth:try giving it a lil bet of gas when trying to start.....
thats all i can think of, srry for spelling...hope it helps
i'm guessing that your car is a 4-cylinder. this is common for inline 4-cylinder engines. since the spark plug holes usually go through the valve cover, the valve cover gasket will leak and collect in the spark plug holes. to fix this you will have to replace the valve cover gasket.
you have a bad valve cover gasket/ spark plug o-ring i assume the plug is set in the head with valve cover above it since there is oil in the cover gaskets and o rings are used to seal in oil remove and replace gaskets be sure to find the right torque spec for the cover bolts also remember to start with the center bolts and work your way evenly to the outside
Sounds like your valve cover gasket is leaking oil into your spark plugs and is causing both of your problems. if you have oil on one of your plugs then that plug can't fire correctly causing the car not to start. I would suggest that you change the plug that has been fouled by the oil and check the wire if it got a lot of oil on it as well as the oil can degrade their ability to insulate, and the plugs will start arcing up the sides and engine will start misfiring. You should be able to change the valve cover gasket relatively easy with a couple of tools. Hope this helps. Thanks for ranking my response and for using FixYa!
when you changed you valve cover gasket did you torque it to specs? also did you use some type of sealant around the holes where the plugs go through as well as each corner and complete left side where the semicircle cutout is? pull all of your plugs and see if they are oil fouled this would prevent a spark and you engine wouldn't start if it's bad enough.
Yes the oil can cause the car to lose spark, the oil leak could be caused by the valve cover gaskets around the spark openings, but 9 times out of 10 it is the spark plug tube "O" rings. The top of the valve train comes off of the head, the "O" rings are between the two halves, that will fix the oil leak.
