I have a subaru legacy stationwagon 2.5 GT. I used to have stall outs allot. When I had some friends pull the (fuel sending unite) under the back seat. The 5x5 flat screen unite on the bottom of the "unite" was clogged with rust particles/flakes/chips? don't ask me how rust got into the tank? . Its starting to stall out again, its a year later now. It could be the fuel filter this time? don't forget...if you pull the fuel sending unite use gasket material when sealing the unite back in. If you don't you'll have gas vapors comming into the car, must use the sealent!

Sounds likely to be the fuel filter which is located under the hood on the left hand side close to the brake master cylinder. It is of the cartridge type, so if it has not been serviced lately, throw it away and get a new one.

I recently purchased a 2003 Subaru Legacy with 101,000, automatic transmission. The car had the head gaskets, timing and water pump done around 100,000 miles. I noticed last night that the engine temp...

Usually, if you shut the heater off, then the temperature will climb. The interior heater will actually assist in cooling the engine's coolant.
Subaru head gaskets rarely ever fail by the way.
First, pressure test the cooling system and make sure you have no leaks. Also check the radiator cap for condition and fitment. Then check and/or replace the engine thermostat.
Subarus are generally speaking, extremely reliable vehicles and don't often show these types of issues.

I would replace the filter and verify the fuel pressure. should be 30-40psi but I dontt have the exact spec. The oil in the plug tubes may be caused by leaking valve cover gaskets.

Flashing check engine light 1999 Subaru

Any time your check engine light is flashing this indicates an engine misfire that has the potential to damage your catalytic conveter. A diagnostic trouble code has been stored in the vehicles onboard computer that will confirm the engine misfire. Continued driving may ruin your very expensive catalytic converter located in your front exhaust pipe.
Good luck, I hope this answers your question.

1997 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5L

Check the knock sensor.

The light comes on when you climb a hill, accelerate quickly or do anything that advances the timing a lot and the knock sensor doesn't hear the knocks (pinging). The engine timing is not retarded, so you get a misfire.

The computer turns off the CEL if it sees the car start and run with no misfire of this nature 4 times in a row.

Check engine light for misfire cylinder 2 and 4

If the engine seems like it's OK but you are just seeing a solid Check Engine Light, and if the light has ever mysteriously gone out on its own, check the Knock Sensor. Over time they rust. I have had the repair done on my 2 subies (a 97 and a 99).

The CEL will go out on its own if you have 4 starts with no misfires. If the knock sensor is out, rapid accelleration or steep hill climbing will make the light come back on as the timing advances and the sensor does not ****** the timing for you, so the knocking becomes a misfire.
