My 2004 GMC sierra Makes a clicking noise right when it starts up and then it will quit. It only does it for about 10-15 seconds and then stops. IT only does it when it's been sitting for a while. (overnight or sitting at the office all day) Also when it does make this noise smoke comes out the exhaust. Anyone know what the problem could be?
The smoke if it's white and goes away is just condensation in the exhaust system evaporating and the clicking noise could be the famous GM Piston slap. You can take it to the GM Dealer, there is an upgrade ECM program to help eliminate the piston slap noise when the engine is cold. You can also try adding some Lucas engine treatment to your engine oil to help with the piston slap problem. Start with that and hope it's not overdue for an oil change or low oil level in the engine.
Thank you for using Fixya
Sounds like you have a ECM program issue or a sensor issue. Try running fuel injector cleaner for the next week and see if the problem goes away. Could be the fuel injectors are not timed right or dirty, can be caused by a faulty sensor or bad fuel can also do this. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, have them scan the truck for any DTC codes and buy some fuel injector cleaner. I use Lucas fuel injector cleaner since the bottle last me like 6 months, just follow the instructions on the bottle.
Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your truck running 100% again soon.

THe smoke was blueish and it only does it when the clicking is going on. ALso, this does not happen at ever cold start just sometimes.
It's weird that your truck makes the clicking noise for 15 seconds after it starts and then stops. My Ford does something similar, but it makes a squeaking noise too, and it lasts maybe a minute after it starts. I'm not sure if you've solved the problem, but I'm going to take mine to a truck repair service.http://www.jpstruckservice.com/services
