How do i remove the harmonic balancer bolt to replace the timing cocer gasket on a 1999 ford tarus se
If there is no air-compressor and an impact gun to remove the harmonic balancer bolt, then there are two other ways to remove it. Either remove the inspection cover at the bell-housing and use a large flat head screwdriver to wedge between the flex-plate drive gear teeth and the engine block so that the engine is locked-up, and then remove the harmonic balancer bolt with a long breaker bar and a lot of muscle power, or for the more advanced mechanics and only they should attempt this, place a long breaker bar on the harmonic balancer bolt and then brace the breaker bar up against the frame of the vehicle so that when the engine turns over the breaker bar will stop on the vehicle frame, and keep in mind that the crankshaft will turn clockwise or to the right, and when you are looking for some place to brace the breaker bar be sure that nothing else will get in the way or it will be damaged. Be sure that the breaker bar is on the harmonic balancer bolt properly, and place the breaker bar about 1 to 2 inches from the vehicle frame so that when the engine turns the breaker bar will lock up against the vehicle frame, and while holding the breaker bar in place have someone turn the ignition key and give the starter a bump, and be very sure to keep your hand away from where the breaker bar is going to contact the vehicle frame, or your fingers will get smashed by the breaker bar when it turns into the frame so do not attempt this if you are unfamiliar with using hand tools, and the starter should break the harmonic balancer bolt loose easily, so be very sure that your hands are out of the way of getting hurt when the starter motor is used to break the harmonic balancer bolt loose.
