where to start? any steering fluid? steering belt ok? steering wheel tight? steering pump ok? front end pitman and idler arm(s) ok? front end bushings or rod ends ok? steering box gears steipped? steering rack could be stripped. check all these first then get back to me.
turning the steering wheel lock to lock can NOT damage anything in the transmission but if you hold it for extended periods of time you can damage the power steering pump.
Hi:
You are correct: Turning the steering wheel has zero effect on the drive train: It can scuff your tires, and possibly put some wear and tear on the steering and suspension system, but your engine and transmission are safe!
No Issues with Transmission would occur by turning the steering wheel back and fourth, Nor will it damage the brakes. And the only way it would cause a tire problem would be if you sat on concrete and turned the wheel back and forth 100,000 times.
But you are correct. Doing so will not harm your transmission.
Steering and transmission and two completely different components one will not affect the other. I hope that answes your question. thanks for using FIX YA
Your are correct. The steering has nothing to do with the transmission. It is not a good idea to use the power steering to turn the wheel lock to lock on a hard surface, and especially not with the brakes on. Howerver, if you do this, and the car is in drive, you will be putting more load on the engine and cause it to lug down at idle, even more. It is possible to actually "stall" the toeque converter with out harming it. In fact this is one way of testing for slippage in the transmission clutches and brake bands So the answer to your question is no..
My opinion is strain yes damage no. You know when you turn the wheel all the way to one side the tires are "grinding" into the pavement this causes you to give it a little extra gas to get the car to move...right? But I don't think that would cause damage. If I'm wrong then you have the worlds' worst engineered car!
Turning lock to lock as you describe is making the steering pump work hard since the wheels are stuck to the pavement.
turning or putting "strain" on the steering WILL NOT have any effect or damage to the torque convertor. However, sitting stationary for log periods of time with the vehicle in gear can cause damge on the torque convertor over time.
