Hi, The most common cause for an electrical component to fail in a vehicle dashboard configuration is a blown fuse. According to the diagram for the fuse panel for your vehicle, the radio has two-10 amp fuses, one located in slot 17 and the other in slot 19. Slot 19 should be on the top of the far left row of fuses, while 17 should be on the next row over, one up from the bottom. The Speedometer issue sounds more like a wire is grounding out somewhere. If it were the fuse, your entire instrument panel would go dead because the entire panel is routed through one 10 amp fuse in slot 4, far right row, third up from the bottom. You can check that fuse as well, but the loss and regaining of power to the speedometer and the fact that you didn't mention other instruments in the cluster going out lead me to believe there is a bad wire somewhere. Hope this helps!
Check in the fuse block; access door is on the driver's side edge of the instrument panel. Pull off the cover to access the fuse block. Look for tag "IGN 1" for Ignition, Instrument Panel...

Hi. Your 2001 Chevy Silverado is equipped with Antilock Brake System (ABS). You will identify also if your car is equipped with ABS by looking at the instrument panel for a yellow ABS indicator light after you turn on the ignition.
If the other door works then the fuse is good. Before replacing the motor try twisting on the harness that goes from the door a disappears into the inner fender, wires in this harness get broken off from the tears of twisting when the door is opened and shut.
I actually had the exact same thing happen to my 2001 Silverado and I bought an instrument cluster too. It was the 10A radio fuse in the fuse panel beside the dash. It was not pushed in all the way.
it appears that fuse 30 and the relay right beside it are for the fuel pump. the relay is definately for the fuel pump tho. it's located in the fuse panel inside the engine compartment near the battery.

I hope this helps a little, you said the fuse box panel is gone....so how do you know some fuses are missing?
I just bought a 1988 silverado also, the wipers ,power windows and windshield washer fluid only work "when they want to" I think I have a bad ground somewhere.
