Check the heater control valve in line with the heater
hoses. With the heat on, the hoses on both sides of
the valve should be hot. If not. check the actuator on
valve, if it feels loose remove the valve and check the
shutoff flap inside to see if it is loose on the shaft.
This can cause intermitent heat. For some reason I
can't find the diagram for your car so I'm working
from memory. But I hope it helps.

Check the vacuum diaphragm in the heater hose. It's a little metal valve with a hose going to it. When the heat is turned on the vacuum line opens the valve letting hot water pass through the heater core.

Why do my 88 cutlass ciera overheat

I would check the thermostat and make sure your fluids are up in the rad.as well see if the fan runs when it's hot. If the fan runs then it's doing it's job. Is the rad clean or plugged as that will make it over heat as well.

Radiator Flush without emptying the radiator

I doubt it. If the heater core is plugged up the cooling system still functions but you don't get any heat.
The radiator could be clogged up, or it could be a sticking thermostat among other things.

How to change a thermastat on a 1988 olds delta

Hello: Follow the top hose coming from the radiator to the engine toward the drivers side. Remove hose from housing. The thermostat is under the housing. Here is where it gets tricky, steel bolts go into aluminum and have a tendency to freeze up, if you force them you may break them off. Do this before attempting to do the task. Get engine hot then spray with WD-40. Let soak a couple of days. If that doesn't work, again get engine hot, pour brake fluid around bolts and soak for a couple of days. You don't have to drain more than a couple of quarts out of the radiator to do this job.

1988 88 v6 delta oldsmobile car idles rough and heats up when in use but seems to be holding fluid and has oil but no heat just cold air and lots of smoke when is initially started

Lots of white smoke is a sure sign of a head gasket problem. Thats actually steam you are seeing. Coolant is getting into one or two of the cylinders overnight, when you start th car in the morning, the heat of combustion steam that coolant and it comes out the tailpipe. The only solution is to pull the heads. Be sure to have the heads checked for cracks. Hope this helps.

1984 Olds Delta 88 307 over heats.

If you have an automatic transmission that is routed through your cooling system, and you've tried everything possible to correct overheating, your tranny may be on its way out. The problems your tranny may be having having operating normally could be effecting the engine temp.
THE other problem may be that you just need to replace your radiator cap. If that fails then check your fan to make sure that they are working. if that fails that it could be a bad head gasket and it needs to be replaced
