Check the fuse, then the relay in the power distribution box. Probably one of the two.
1996 Ford Thunderbird V6. Turn switch stop functioning, only 3rd brake light functioned. Phillips screws hold the covers together on the column. Bought a replacement switch, due to comments, and other who experienced same issue. Purchased new switch. Installed. Remove the entire switch before attempting to disconnect the wiring connectors. The top piece on column does not need to be removed. Tilt steering stick should be removed. About a 4 or 5 mm wrench, smaller than a quarter, and 6mm. there's a indentation toward the flare, had to use a very small crescent wrench. The screws that hold the switch assembly to the column are security CT-T15 torx. Do not try the switch before installation on the column. Needs ground of column to work. Installed switch on column, tried emergency flashers, FLASHED TWICE, and QUIT. What the ****. Disassemble again, sprayed electronic cleaner into wiring harness connectors, reassembled, and it WORKS. Kept the original switch on. If it wasn't so hot down here in Dixie, I'd try the other switch. Morale of the story. It may not be the switch but the wiring harness contacts. Try cleaning the contacts first before going out and buying a new switch.

When this happens the problem is most likely the multi-funtion switch aka turn signal switch. Check to see if the 3rd brakelight comes on when the brake pedal is pushed. If so replace the MFS. The 3rd brakelight in late 80's fords bypasses the turnsignal switch.

You might have cut a wire or it could have broken or disconnected. Try tracing the wiring where you hooked up the trailer you may find one broken or disconnected.

An 89, that old enough that oxidation could be a problem.
I'd start by separating all the connectors you can get to, unfortunately there may be one over the gas tank. You can take a light and see if there is one by having someone pull and release the tail light wire as you look.
Thoroughly clean each end of the connector until you can see a little copper show. If it looks like there was grease on the connector, apply some dielectric grease before you reconnect the wires.

Have you checked the contacts to make sure they are touching the bulb base. I have a 1995 Ford Contour that did the same thing. I took a screwdriver and bent the contacts out very slightly and it has worked fine ever since.
