The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) and Camshaft position sensor (CMP) work in harmony to control the spark/fuel delivery and timing. They both consist of a reluctor, or tone, ring which passes over a magnetic sensor, which generates a voltage, indicating position.

The crankshaft sensor is part of the primary ignition system and functions as the "trigger". It detects the position of the crankshaft relays that information on to the PCM or the ignition module (depending on the vehicle) to control spark timing. The Camshaft position sensor detects the position of the camshafts and relays the information to the PCM. The PCM uses the CMP signal to identify the beginning of the injector sequence. What ties these two shafts and their sensors together is the timing belt or chain. The cam and crank should be precisely timed together. If the PCM detects that the Crank and Cam signals are out of time by a specific number of degrees, this P0016 code will set.

Causes may include:
Timing chain stretched, or timing belt skipped a tooth due to wear
Misalignment of timing belt/chain
Tone ring on crankshaft slipped/broken
Tone ring on camshaft slipped/broken
Bad crank sensor
Bad cam sensor
Damaged wiring to crank/cam sensor
Timing belt/chain tensioner damaged

First, visually inspect the cam and crank sensors and their harnesses for damage. If you notice broken/frayed wires, repair and recheck.
If you have access to a scope, check the cam and crank patterns. If a pattern is missing, suspect a bad sensor or a slipping tone ring. Remove the cam gear and the crankshaft harmonic balancer and inspect the tone rings for proper alignment and make sure they're not loose or damaged or that they haven't sheared the key that aligns them. If they are properly installed, replace the sensor.
If the signal appears normal, then check the timing chain/belt for proper alignment. If it's misaligned, check for a damaged tensioner that may have allowed the chain/belt to slip a tooth or several teeth. Also check that the belt/chain isn't stretched. Repair and recheck..

When it stalls out did you check the spark? I suspect the engine is losing spark due to an ignition system failure.

I have a po340 a po341 an a po016 code on a 2006 dodge caravan want start

Hi !
P0340 = This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit.
P0341 = Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0016 = Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

The common point of these errors is the camshaft sensor, so I'm afraid you need to visit a service.

Dodge 2002 stratus 2.4liter codes po016 p0700 ,po562,what could these mean & how do you fix

lets start with po562, this is a transmission code with low voltage reading at trans solenoids, for this code test your battery and alternator,
the next code po700, this code is to tell you that there is a transmission code stored in the transmission module, which could be the po700. but sccanning the trans module may be a good idea to check for other codes, i assume at this point you are having transmission problems? as far as these codes i would check all fuses and connectors going to transaxle(transmission). you may have internal problems, as we know these chrysler transmissions are junk but you may have bad connection or bad wire to transaxle controller.
last code po016 this code i would check first, i have worked on a few of these that had po016 which means crank and cam correlation . this means the crank and cam are not aligned meaning worn chain , these 2.7 engine... or cam gear spun. testing this ,you will need to know about car repair or you could damage the engine if it isnt already.

2005 kia sedona error code po016. it will start but sounds bad. possible issues?

Hi there:
DTC P0016 - CRANKSHAFT/CAMSHAFT TIMING MISALIGNMENT

When Monitored: Engine cranking and Engine running
Set Condition: Powertrain Control Module detects an error when the camshaft position is out of phase with the crankshaft position.

The title of this code pretty muc h tells us what is going on. Although, I haven't seen a timing chain jump on one of these engines it is still a possibility.

What I would suspect first however, is that the flex plate has broken and allowed the outer portion of the plate to shift in relation to the center portion. What this does it throw the cam and crank signals out of sync... much like having a timing chain that has jumped.

You should be able to dual trace the cam and crank signals to verify they are in time or not, and it appears they are not based on your 16 degree difference.

Hope this helps.

2000 vw cabrio runs normal and shuts down, takes 5 to 20 minutes to restart, engine cranks but doesnt start, changed ignition coil, pulled diagnostic codes getting short to ground codes on cylinder...

On some models, the Engine Control unit has a power supply relay. These relays some times get internal dry solder points. After driving for some time the the solder will get hot and separate. When it cools down it makes contact again. You will have to replace this relay or open it up and re- solder the solder joints. The relay is usually located on the main relay station in position 3. the relay station is located behind the right dash panel.[right hand drive vehicles]. You may need to refer to a manual for your specific model to find the exact location of the relay.

Cannot unlock the radio on my SAAB 9000 CDE

I have a Saab 900 -97 with a similar problem. I just solved it yesterday on my car. Hold the Band button in for like 10-15 sec when you see "Code In", It clears the error log in the radio. If it doen´t work, enter a wrong code so the code hangs on the display and then press the band button to clear the error log. It worked on my car, good luck!
