Ok, this is a little tricky, open the cubby hole/ arm rest, lift up the little mat in the bottom (if you still have it) there will be two bolts under there, take them out, then, where the piece that you just worked on meets the area where the gear shift is, there will be a screw on each side, take both out, set the e-brake, and slide the cubby console off the e brake, then if you look down in the hole, you will see a small 2-wire harness that you have to twist out, thats where the light is, Hope this helps! I have a 1998 Toyota Corolla LE. Was helpful, but missing some helpful hints. I just changed the bulb today. The bulb is a sylvania 2723. After taking out the two bolts and two screws from the cubby console, you need to lift the front of the cubby console about a half inch or so. It has plastic hooks that need to be lifted up before the cubby console can move back and up. Next, the bulb was approximately under the "L" of the shifter. Do yourself a favor and get a flash lite and a mirror so you can see the wires and bulb socket. Looking down from the top, the bulb socket turns clockwise to remove. I have big hands and it was tough to turn the socket to a position where it could be pulled down and out. The wires are short, but sufficient length to change the bulb. A kid could probably reach in and turn the socket easily. Hope this is helpful.
